Since 1984, Horatio Alger Association Members and Friends have funded need-based college scholarships for low-income youth to pursue their dreams through higher education. So far the Association has awarded more than $125 million to approximately 20,000 students.

The Scholarship Association is committed to providing financial assistance through a scholarship for students to study at the institution of their choice and achieve their dreams.

As one of the nation’s largest college financial aid programs in the country, the Program is one of the major scholarship programs nationally that specifically assists high school students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their young lives.

The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans sponsors this scholarship. Horatio Alger Association, founded in 1947, is a nonprofit organization based in Alexandria, Virginia.
However, it was founded to honor the achievements of outstanding Americans who have succeeded in spite of adversity and to emphasize the importance of higher education.
Meanwhile, the association is named for Horatio Alger, a 19th-century author of hundreds of dime novels in the “rags-to-riches” genre, extolling the importance of perseverance and hard work.
Hence, the association gives the annual Award to exemplars of its ideals. It also grants scholarships and describes itself as the largest provider of need-based scholarships in the United States. The generosity of the members of the Horatio Alger Association funds all scholarships.

Eligibility for Alger Scholarships
To be eligible for this scholarship, the following must be met by applicants:
- Be enrolled full-time as a high school senior in the United States; be progressing normally toward graduation in spring/summer with plans to enter a college in the United States no later than the fall following graduation.
- Moreso, exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree at an accredited non-profit public or private institution in the United States (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution).
- Demonstrate critical financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income is required).
- Be involved in co-curricular and community service activities.
- Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity.
- Maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0; and
- Be a United States citizen
This scholarship program is for high school seniors in the United States; be progressing normally toward graduation in the spring/summer of 2020 with plans to enter a college in the United States no later than the fall following graduation.

Horatio Alger National Career & Technical Scholarship
Horatio Alger National Career & Technical Scholarship Program is created by The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans. To be applying for the scholarship applicants will be enrolled in the eligible program in fall 2023 and under the age of 30.
However, the scholarship is designed to support deserving young people overcome their adversity and pursue their dreams through higher education. 1020 awards, each of $2,500, will be given to deserving candidates.

Horatio Alger Association scholarship FAQs
In order to be considered, your application and all required materials must be uploaded to your online application by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on October 25. To be considered for the Horatio Alger Trott Scholarship, applicants must complete the Horatio Alger Scholarship application by September 25.
Over time the Horatio Alger Association has expanded the program. Every year, the association awards more than 100 National scholarships to students from every U.S. state and Puerto Rico. Grants received by these National Scholars are valued at $25,000 each.
Through the generosity of its Members and friends, in 2017, the Association awarded more than $18 million in undergraduate and graduate need-based scholarships across the United States and Canada, and also provided college support services to its Scholars.
The 4-year undergraduate application is available annually from August 1 and close October 25. The Career & Technical application is available March 15.
