Who Is Anita Borg?

Dr. Anita Borg (1949–2003) was a technology rebel who fought relentlessly to make sure that technology’s impact on human endeavor is positive. She dedicated her adult life to revolutionizing the way people perceive technology.

She believed that technology has a direct impact on our social, political, economic, and personal lives. Dr. Anita strived to break down barriers that discouraged women and children from the technology and computing fields.

Her combination of technical expertise and fearless vision continues to inspire and motivate countless women.

Google is proud to honor Anita’s memory and support women in technology with the following scholarship programs:

  • Women Techmakers Scholarship for computer science (APAC, EMEA, and NA)

About The Arizona State Anita Borg Scholarships 2023

Dr. Anita Borg proposed the “50/50 by 2020” movement. This was to ensure that women earning computing degrees would be 50% of the graduates by the year 2023. However, the percentage of Computer Science degrees earned by women is still far from 50% throughout the world.

As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to promoting Anita’s vision, Google supports women in technology with the Women Techmakers Scholars Program (formerly the Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship).

Through the scholarship, Google aims to encourage women to be outstanding in computing technology and in becoming active role models.
