The Bahamian Education System

One of the notable things that make the Bahamas unique is its system of education. Bahamanian people use an education system that is based on the British model.

In the elementary (first six) grades, students progress, depending on their performance on the tests taken at the end of each academic year.

In high school, they take the first major external test, the National Junior Certificate Exam. They must pass the Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) to graduate from this level.

The first stage is primary education, which lasts for six years and is designed to meet the needs of students from 5 to 11 years old. Secondary education is divided into two equal parts of three years; the junior high program is designed for students aged 11 to 14 years, while students ages 14 to 17 are expected to attend a higher level.

After secondary education, a student who has passed and acquired the Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education can enroll in a higher institution.

Students in the Bahamas can acquire Higher education from any of the following tertiary institutions; the College of the Bahamas, the University of the West Indies Regional, the Bahamas College for Training and the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute.

Aside from the already listed schools, there are some other schools where students can pursue their tertiary education in the Bahamas. The University of Miami, the University of Southeast Nova and other universities in the United States offer classes in the Bahamas for students too.
