The United States – Japan Bridging Foundation (USJBF), a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization created in 1998, was established at the recommendation of the Japan-US Friendship Commission, an independent federal agency. Historically, few American students studied in Japan relative to other countries and the Commission sought to encourage more study abroad in Japan to increase understanding and cooperation between Japan and the US.
Eligibility:
To receive the Bridging Scholarship a beneficiary
- Must be U.S. citizens
- Enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the United States before and during the time they are studying abroad.
How to Apply:

- Candidates must write 500 words short essay in this essay you must tell about yourself explaining your reasons for wishing to study in Japan, and outline what you hope to achieve by participating in a study-abroad program (3 copies)
Supporting Documents:
The scholarship recipients must provide the following documents:
- Two additional copies of this application form (3 copies total).
- An official transcript issued from your university’s registrar.
- A letter of recommendation from someone who knows you and is knowledgeable about your abilities and potential, preferably a professor or instructor in your major course of study. This letter may either be submitted together with the application or sent separately by the recommender
Financial Aid and Award Money:
Recipients who will win the scholarship, receive a stipend of $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic year programs).
Application Deadline:
Applications for the scholarship program will be accepted until April 11, 2017.
