USA Diversity(DV) Visa Lottery

The Diversity Visa program (DV Lottery) is congressionally-mandated and allows up to 55,000 persons from nations that are historically underrepresented in terms of migration to the United States of America to qualify each year for immigrant visas which are also known as Green Cards.

The program is called the “Green Card Lottery” or “DV lottery” because the winners are determined through a random drawing from among the 10–12 million people who enter each year worldwide.

DV Lottery Requirements: Who can participate?

Basically, everybody can win a green card in the official DV lottery. The only exceptions are persons born in a country with a very high rate of emigration into the US.

One’s country of citizenship is not important in this process. What is most important is the country of your birth, in accordance with current world political maps.

Excluded Countries

Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (mainland born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam.

Persons born in Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and Taiwan are eligible.

Individuals who were born in any of the above-mentioned excluded countries may apply if their spouses were born in one of the eligible countries, or if the individuals were born in an excluded country while parents (both not born in this excluded country) if said individuals were only temporary residents of the excluded, non-eligible countries.

Other Conditions

The only other requirement is a certification of completion of secondary school education (comparable to the US high school diploma) or a minimum of two years’ work experience (within the past five years) in a profession that requires at least two years of training.

Proof of these prerequisites is only necessary when and if a lottery participant wins a GreenCard. They are not necessary when you are simply submitting the application.

Further Requirements

12 years of high school or it’s equivalent or job training

RECOMMENDATION:

If you do not have the equivalent of a high school degree and you not sure if your job “requires two years of training” you should check the US Department’s of State Online Database ONET by clicking here. Type in your profession and click on “Summary”. You will find an analysis of how many years of experience in your job are needed in the chapter

N/B: List your family members correctly

You must list your partner/spouse (if you are married) and all your children under 21 years on your DV lottery application. Your spouse´s children must be listed too! Photos must be provided by all family members on the application!

This does not mean that all family members have to immigrate to the US. After winning, the principal applicant can decide who to take along or not! However, all family members must be listed on the initial DVLottery application to avoid disqualification!

US Visa Lottery 2022

Applicants have to submit entries for the DV-2021 program electronically at dvlottery.state.gov. There is no cost to register for the DV Program. Do not wait until the last week of the registration period to enter, as heavy demand may result in website delays.

No late entries or paper entries will be accepted. The law allows only one entry by or for each person during each registration period.

The Department of State uses sophisticated technology to detect multiple entries. Individuals with more than one entry submitted will be disqualified. Please retain your printed confirmation screen containing your name and a unique confirmation number for your records.

You will be able to check the status of your entry through the Entrant Status Check on the E-DV website at https://dvlottery.state.gov/ using your unique confirmation number and personal information.

It will be the only way to check whether your entry was selected. If you lose your confirmation number, there is a special tool to recover it available on the E-DV website.

If your entry is selected, you will be directed to a confirmation page that will provide further instructions, including information on fees connected with immigration to the United States.

If you are selected we encourage you to complete the DS-260 visa applications soon. The Embassy started processing DV-2021 visa lottery cases from October 1, 2021, till September 30, 2021.

Instructions for the DV-2021 Visa Lottery Program are available on the website of the State Department.

Please view our video for an introduction to the Diversity Visa Program, and step-by-step guidance to help you submit an entry.

DV-2021 Program

Online registration for the DV-2021 Program has ended. Electronic Diversity Visa Entry Forms were submitted online at https://www.dvlottery.state.gov/. It is extremely important that you retain your confirmation page and confirmation number.

You may check the status of your entry when the next registration starts at http://www.dvlottery.state.gov/, by clicking on Entrant Status Check and entering your unique confirmation number and personal information.

Entrant Status Check is the sole means of informing you of your selection for DV-2021, providing instructions on how to proceed with your application, and notifying you of your appointment for an immigrant visa interview.

Please note that winning the DV Lottery does not mean getting an immigrant visa or a green card. DV applicants have to meet all the requirements for both the DV Lottery and the U.S. immigrant visa to be eligible to obtain it.

Electronic lottery entry in the annual DV program is free (there is no fee). To enter the DV lottery, you must be a native of one of the countries listed by the State Department. Persons born in Lithuania qualify for the DV-2021 and 2021 programs.
