Application for the 2022 L’Oreal African Hair & Skin Research grant is ongoing!
L’Oréal has long been committed to a better understanding of the characteristics of skin and hair in Africa. In line with this vision, L’Oréal Medical Directorate created the L’Oréal African Hair and Skin Research Grant in 2013.
It is aimed at clinical, basic and molecular researchers studying hair and skin physiology. The grant is opened to certified dermatologists, epidemiologists and scientists in Africa.
Who can apply for L’Oréal African Hair & Skin Research Grant?
L’Oréal African Hair and Skin Research Grant are aimed at clinical, basic, and molecular researchers studying hair and skin physiology. The grant is open to certified dermatologists, epidemiologists, and scientists in Africa.
In accordance with the terms and conditions set forth below, it is mutually agreed to establish a research grant aimed at sponsoring clinical research and basic research on African skin & hair in the following fields:
- Skin immunology
- Skin photobiology
- Wound healing
- Skin pigmentation
- Hair pigmentation
- Skin barrier function, Stratum Corneum
- Skin neurophysiology/ sensitive skin/heat sensation
- Hair characterization
- Skin aging
- Skin tissue engineering
- Sebaceous physiology and oily skin epidemiology
- Biology of hair growth
- Hair loss
- Scalp biology
The above research projects may be based on laboratory work, clinical research, or epidemiology research.
The Grant application is open to, certified dermatologists (with a registration number); scientists specializing in hair & skin research, epidemiologists interested in hair & skin.
The principal investigator will be responsible for satisfactory completion of the relevant project and will be responsible for approval of the grant by contract. He/she is denominated as “selected applicant”

This year, another successful investigator, chosen by a panel of African and international scientific jury, will be awarded the grand prize up to 20,000.00€ for a one-year project.
The grant winner will also gain visibility and a network of scientists to tailor and guide their research thus opening the door for future opportunities.
In addition, all applicants will receive personalised feedback on submitted research proposal from the selected panel of African and international experts of African hair and skin.
