About The Scholarship

At Queen’s University in Belfast, the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) are offering two GREAT international Ph.D. scholarships in partnership with the GREAT campaign of the British Council.

This year, the award is named the ChinaGREAT20 which means that the award is restricted to Chinese students only.

Applications are open to students wishing to complete a Ph.D. program. Scholarships cover tuition fees only for the first full year of the Ph.D. program (each scholarship has a value of £16,300).

Level/Field of Study

The GREAT International Ph.D. Scholarships 2022 are open to students pursuing a Ph.D. program in the following fields in the Faculty: Arts, English, and Languages; History, Anthropology, Politics, and Philosophy; Law; Queen’s Management School; Social Sciences, Education and Social Work.

Host Nationality

Eligible Nationality

These GREAT PhD Scholarships are open to only Chinese students.

Scholarship Worth

Successful applicants of the ChinaGREAT20 will receive £16,300 and this award will provide a full tuition waiver for the first year of a three year PhD program at Queen’s.

Eligibility

To qualify for the GREAT PhD Scholarships 20, candidates must meet all of the above criteria:

• To be eligible for the ChinaGREAT20 Award, students must be Chinese nationals.
• Students are not allowed to receive funds from another organization.
• Applicants must be able to begin their studies in September/October 2022. The award cannot be deferred.
• Students must be considered international students paying tuition fees who pay international tuition fees to be eligible for this program. Those who pay NI/GB/EU are not eligible for international scholarships.
• Students must complete a full-time program at the Queen’s University campus in Belfast beginning with the 2022-2023 academic year and meet all academic and language requirements associated with their offer, as specified in their letter of offer.
• Applicants studying part-time or in a basic diploma in training, distance-learning, or any other type of program are not eligible.
• Students wishing to pursue a doctoral program in one of the following faculties: arts, English and languages; History, Anthropology, Politics and Philosophy; the law; Queen’s Management School; Social sciences, education, and social work.

How to Apply

To apply for one of the GREAT PhD Scholarships, applicants must submit an application to Queen’s through the online application portal link provided below:

It must be a complete application, including a PhD proposal. They recommend that students contact their desired PhD supervisor before applying to Queen’s.

Also, when submitting an application on the online application portal, please tick ‘I will apply separately to an external body’ then enter ChinaGREAT20 under ‘To which body do you intend to apply?’ It is important that you enter this code so that your scholarship is taken into account.

Notwithstanding, it is important to take note of the following:

• The selection of the candidates will strictly be on the strength of their academic profile and the quality of their research proposal.
• All students enrolled in the pre-selection process must have received a Ph.D. study offer by March 22, 2022.
• Students must meet Queen’s academic requirements and English entry requirements – most programs require a minimum of IELTS 6.5.
• For students who have already applied to the university and obtained a place, please contact your local school administrator and supervisor to let them know that you would like to be considered for this award.
