About the Sponsor: International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF)

International Women’s Media Foundation is a foundation that works to unleash the power of female journalists to transform the global news media.

However, they train their fellows and grantees — both freelance and staff journalists to become experts in reporting in underserved regions, generate must-read stories, align with top outlets, and bring critical issues affecting women and others to light.

Additionally, they research the factors that allow journalism to remain dominated by men. This is done while advocating for inclusive practices that help propel women and minorities into leadership.

Also, they are the only organization that provides safety training, byline opportunities, and emergency support tailored to female journalists and photographers around the world.

Furthermore, they also recognize badass female journalists and photographers whose courage sets them apart.

Who is Kim Wall?

Kim Isabel Fredrika Wall was a Swedish freelance journalist who was passionate about her career. She was born in Trelleborg, Scania, to Ingrid and Joachim Wall, and had a younger brother, Tom.

After graduating from high school in Malmö, she received a bachelor’s degree in international relations at the London School of Economics. Also, she received a dual master’s degree in journalism and international relations at Columbia University in New York City.

Hence, she wrote reports about a variety of topics for publication such as The Guardian, The New York Times, Vice, Slate, and Time.

Kim was murdered by an entrepreneur known as Peter Madsen. In fact, she went to visit in his submarine with the intent of interviewing him.

The submarine was found sunken the following morning and Madsen was arrested upon being rescued from the water.

Between 21 August and 29 November, Wall’s dismembered body parts were found in different locations around the area. Charged with her murder, Madsen was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment on 25 April 2018 by Copenhagen City Court.
