Let us talk briefly about the university before entering James Edward Oglethorpe Scholarships 2023.

About Oglethorpe University

Oglethorpe University is a private liberal arts institution located in the city of Atlanta, Georgia. First established in 1835, it had a troubled history, plagued by funding and political problems, before finally being opened permanently in 1913.

The university is primarily based on a 100-acre campus, itself included in the National Register of Historic Places. While the university is home to several exciting and important historical sites, one of the best-known is a time capsule known as the Crypt of Civilisation.

Due to being opened in the year 8113, it sealed the time capsule in 1936 and contains many important cultural and historical artifacts. The campus is also home to several other historical places, including the Oglethorpe Museum of Art.

Like many universities, Oglethorpe maintains a diverse athletics program. Known for their mascot, Stormy Petrel (named after a famous seabird), Oglethorpe’s athletic teams compete in a wide range of sports, including lacrosse, basketball, tennis, softball, and volleyball.

Regarding academic offerings, the university has around 25 majors available, covering mixed subjects across Natural Science, Social Science, and Humanities.

Alongside this are a smaller number of undergraduate minors and some pre-professional qualifications. The university also offers several foreign study opportunities, a long-standing feature of its academic portfolio.

Oglethorpe has produced several well-known and successful alumni, including MLB Hall of Famer Luke Appling.

What You Need To Know About James Edward Oglethorpe Scholarships

Three primary activities will help determine the winners of the JEO scholarship. These three components (outlined below) seek to identify students who are effective communicators, emerging leaders, and dynamic community participants.

Seminar:

Oglethorpe professors and small groups of scholarship candidates gather for a discussion-based seminar that centers on a topic of common interest.

In December, you will be notified of the seminar options and asked to go online to rank your preference.

Shortly before the competition, you will download and review a reading related to your assigned topic.

As a participant, you will get to experience an Oglethorpe classroom setting while our faculty members can observe the qualities that you bring to the discussion at hand.

Essay:

Following the discussion session, each candidate responds in writing to the seminar. The prompt for this essay will be related to the seminar discussion, and the scholarship committee will review this writing sample as a further sign of your thought processes and self-expression.

Interview:

Members of the Oglethorpe alumni community meet individually with candidates for a one-on-one personal interview lasting about fifteen minutes.

The scholarship committee will also consider each candidate’s academic achievement and involvement, as evidenced in the admission application.
