Lafayette College is a private liberal arts college located in Easton, Pennsylvania. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 2,514 (fall 2020).

The campus size is 340 acres, and it uses a semester-based academic calendar.

Lafayette college was established in 1826 by James Madison Porter and other citizens in Easton, the school first held classes in 1832 with a small satellite campus in New York City. 

In 1824 to 1825, Lafayette college was named after General Lafayette, who is a hero the American revolution who toured the country as “a testimony of respect for [his] virtues, talents, and signal services in the great cause of freedom in the country.

A small group of Easton residents, led by James Madison Porter, met on December 27, 1824, at White’s Tavern to discuss founding a college in town.

The recent visit of General Lafayette to New York during his grand tour of the US in 1824 and 1825 prompted the founders to name the school after the renowned French military officer, considered a hero of the American Revolutionary War.

Student Life in Lafayette College

Lafayette college has almost 200 student organizations, including the popular Greek system of nearly a dozen fraternities and sororities.

Each fraternity and sorority has a house on campus for member students. And Freshmen must live on campus at the residential college, and sophomores, juniors and some seniors.

About 70 seniors applying to move off campus will be approved annually. 

The Lafayette is the oldest student-run publication in the state. Lafayette students can study abroad for a semester, a year or even just a month – in January or May. 

Lafayette Leopards compete in the NCAA Division I Patriot League, and the football team has a notorious rival with Lehigh University’s squad. The school’s interim programs, as the month long sessions are called, have taken students to destinations like the Galapagos Islands, Bali and Egypt over school breaks.

How Do I Join the Lafayette College?

Lafayette college can be easily attended to when the requirements are met, although admission to Lafayette College is highly competitive and the acceptance rate is 31.5%. 

The College receives about 12 applications annually for each available place in the first-year class. It seeks to admit students who are engaged academically and socially and want to make a difference on campus, in the community and in the world.  

Applicants for admission must submit test scores from either the SAT or ACT. Students admitted to Lafayette as full- time, degree-seeking students must have a high school diploma or have a recognized equivalent of a high school diploma at the time of their matriculation. 

For international students- All applicants must submit official SAT or ACT results in writing.  And students whose first language is not English are to submit official results of the TOEFL test, except the language of instruction during their four years of high school has been English.
