The Brenthurst Foundation is happy to accept applications from young graduates for the Machel-Mandela Fellowship Programme, named in honour of former South African President Nelson Mandela and his wife Graça Machel for the 2021 session.

This fellowship programme was established to help sharpen the focus of Brenthrust foundation on the African Youth and nurture them to be great leaders of the society.

The Machel-Mandela Fellowship Programme is the most prestigious of its kind in Africa. Constantly developing the African Youth and preparing them politically and economically for the future ahead.

About the Machel-Mandela Fellowship Programme

Every year, The Brenthurst Foundation accepts application for the Machel-Mandela Fellowship Programme. This programme is named in honour of former South African President, Nelson Mandela and his wife Graça Machel.

Entry into this programme is highly competitive. Hence, not everyone that applied is successful at it.

It is awarded to young graduates of Africa who see a future in African economy and politics.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria

  • Be under 30 years of age
  • Possess a passion for Africa and an interest in new strategies to improve Africa’s economic performance.
  • Be fluent in basic IT skills. Copy-editing and proof-reading skills are a plus.
  • Pay attention to detail and balance headlines
  • Have a Masters degree
  • Be excellent in both spoken and written English. The ability to speak African and other languages would be a plus.
  • Have excellent communication skills
  • Be enthusiastic and reliable, a self-starter, and a person who can work well with little or no supervision.
  • Have a broad knowledge of African politics and economics

Level / Field of Study

This Fellowship Programme is open to African young graduates.

Eligible Nationality

The Fellow may be from South Africa or farther afield.

Programme Worth

  • An all-inclusive stipend per month, including accommodation (subject to Foundation policy).
  • An all-expense-paid work-related trip (subject to Foundation policy).
  • Successful Fellows will work directly with and assist the Foundation’s staff on a range of projects and activities, some of which require foreign travel.
  • They will be based at the Brenthurst Foundation’s headquarters in Parktown, Johannesburg.
  • The Fellowship will be available full-time for a minimum of six months and the selected candidate will be expected to take up an appointment in April 2021.

  • A covering letter – not more than 500 words, stating your interest in the position and the skills you can bring to bear.
  • A writing sample – this can be any piece of work, for example, an essay or a published article, of any length.
  • An up-to-date CV with referees’ details.
  • The earliest date you would be able to start.
  • Details of where you saw the post advertised.

Application Deadline

The Machel-Mandela Fellowship Programme is open for the 2021 session. So, this means that the application is currently ongoing and will close on 15 January 2021.

Due to the high volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. This means that if you don’t get a message from the Brenthurst Foundation by 1 March 2021, it means your application is unsuccessful.
