About the Mandela Rhodes Scholarships Program
The Mandela Rhodes Scholarships Program combines financial support for postgraduate studies with a high-quality leadership development program designed to develop outstanding leadership skills in Africa.
A Mandela Rhodes Scholarship provides full funding for up to two years of postgraduate study for an African citizen under 30. The award is open to all African citizens under the age of 30 years and recipients must study towards Honours or master’s degrees at recognized South African institutions.
Although no maximum number of awards has been stipulated, the scholarships are highly competitive, with fewer than 30 scholarships being awarded each year since its inception in 2005.

Eligibility for Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarships
- The scholarship is open to citizens of all African countries
- The scholarship is intended for postgraduate studies at South African universities or colleges.
- Full funding is available for honors (maximum one year) or masters (maximum two years) or their equivalent (except MBA).
- Anyone between the ages of 19 and 30 at the time of receipt of the scholarship can apply.
- Candidates must have a first degree or equivalent diploma or be qualified by 31 January at the latest.
Candidates must have academic results well above average - People whose character reflects a commitment to education, reconciliation, leadership, and entrepreneurship.
- Candidates must be able to participate in all the mandatory elements of our leadership development program. These activities can take place on weekdays or weekends.
- The Mandela Scholarship cannot be deferred awarded. It must be included in the year for which it was requested.
NOTE: If you are eligible for the scholarship, the Mandela Rhodes Foundation does not apply to higher education institutions on your behalf. Applicants must apply to the university of their choice for the desired degree. The prerequisite for awarding the scholarship is that the candidate is offered a place in the institution concerned.

How to Apply for Mandela Rhodes Scholarships 2023

Mandela Rhodes Scholarships 2023 Selection Process
All applicants apply online through the Embark application system on the MRF website.
Round One:
South African higher education institutions and the MRF (Past Reviewers reviewed applications). By the end of June, all applicants must be informed by the universities and/or the MRF if their application is submitted to the next stage.
Round Two:
Audits by Designated MRF Personnel. By the end of July, the MRF must inform the remaining candidates if their application needs to be submitted by the next step.
Round 3:
Checks by MRF Designated Personnel. At the end of August, the MRF must inform the remaining candidates if their application has passed or not to the next stage.
Final phase:
Interviews with selection committees in October. At the end of October, the jury interviewed candidates to be informed by the MRF whether they had been selected as Mandela Rhodes Scholars.
