The MasterCard Foundation calls on African students to apply for the MasterCard Foundation Scholarships at the University of British Columbia for African Students 2023 in Canada.

The University of British Columbia, Canada is pleased to partner with The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program to provide comprehensive scholarships to students from Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Program provides access to education for academically talented yet economically marginalized young people.

More than 110 students from Africa will receive comprehensive scholarships to live and learn at the University of British Columbia thanks to a $25 million grant from The MasterCard Foundation.

UBC is among the first Canadian universities to join The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program and one of 15 institutions in the world participating in the $500 million global education initiative.

Eligibility Requirements

To be part of the Undergraduate program, the student must be nominated for the Undergraduate MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of British Columbia.

Nominations will be accepted from secondary schools, recognized international development agencies and their affiliates, and registered local or international charitable and not-for-profit organizations.

Each school or organization may nominate a maximum of three students.

To be eligible for consideration as an undergraduate for The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC, you must:

  • Be a citizen of and be currently residing in a Sub-Saharan African country;
  • Present economically disadvantaged financial circumstances, and be able to show you lack financial means from family or other sources to pursue post-secondary (university) education in their home country or elsewhere;
  • have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances and mirrored leadership qualities or potential;
  • Demonstrate an interest and commitment to giving back to his/her home community in ways that enhance the economic growth and social development of Africa, through engagement in activities outside the classroom, in the school, and district;
  • Be graduating/recently graduated from a recognized senior secondary school;
  • Be an international student who will be studying at UBC on a Canadian Study Permit;
  • Commit to returning to Africa immediately after graduation from UBC to apply their training and skills to the betterment of their country and individuals.
  • Be applying for their first undergraduate degree in one of the following Faculties at UBC’s Vancouver campus:

Step Three: Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Eligibility Package

You must complete the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Applications before you apply to UBC.

For the Selection Committee to determine your eligibility for this scholarship, you must exude financial need, a commitment to give back, and how your education will transform your community, region, or country in Africa.

You must:

1. Complete the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Eligibility Form. After determining your eligibility, this would be sent to you through the Program Assistant. If submitting a hand-written Eligibility Form, ensure the document is legible.

2. Submit the Personal Statements as listed at the end of the Eligibility Form, closely adhering to the instructions;

Describe a recent, meaningful involvement in your community, including what your role is/has been in the activity/ies. (200-300 words)

Why are you interested in studying at UBC, and how do you envision your chosen program of study at UBC helping you to reach your long-term career and personal goals?

Persistence is crucial to the completion of this. Please describe a situation where you had to overcome a significant obstacle/ challenge(s) to reach a goal. How did you react to this challenge, and what did you learn from the situation? (200 – 300 words)

What else should we know about your financial condition to consider you for this scholarship? (200-300 words).

3. You need to provide two reference letters. A strong preference will be given to reference letters that can attest to your leadership skills, commitment to community services, and why you are suited for this award.

It is worth noting that each faculty will have specific requirements for reference letters separate from The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program – please follow these requirements when applying with your Faculty.

4. Submit a CV/resume. This has to include any relevant education and work experience.

Step Five: Reviewing Process

In March 2023, Faculties will nominate admitted candidates for the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship for Africans. A university-wide selection committee will review all scholarship applications from the three Faculties, rank them and select award recipients.

In April 2024, only the MCF Scholar award recipients will be contacted, and an announcement will be made about the award recipients.

Unfortunately, because of the large volume of applicants, UBC finds it difficult to reply to unsuccessful applicants about the nature of their applications.
