Background History about Murray State University

Established in 1922, Murray State University (MSU) is a four-year public university located in Murray, Kentucky, United States. With about 10,500 students, it has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges” as one of the top regional universities in the U.S. for 26 straight years.

Murray State Normal School opened on September 23, 1923. Until the first building was completed, now Wrather West Kentucky Museum, classes were held on the first floor of Murray High School.

To be considered for admission each applicant must have received or been receiving a high school diploma or a GED certificate before the term for which he/she is applying. Those individuals who were not graduated from accredited high schools may be required to have a GED.

Murray State University Mascot

The Murray State Racers are the intercollegiate athletic teams representing Murray State University (MSU), located in Murray, Kentucky, United States. The Racers athletic program is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) and competes at the NCAA Division I level including the Football Championship Subdivision.

The MSU teams are the Racers, the costumed racehorse mascot is named Dunker, the live racehorse football mascot is Racer-One, and the school colors are navy blue and gold. Racer teams have won three NCAA rifle championships.

Murray State men’s athletics began in 1925–25, the school’s third year, with the first women’s team following in 1928–29. Originally, the teams were known as the Thoroughbreds, but over time, sports writers and editors found the name Thoroughbreds to be too cumbersome, so they often shortened it as Racers.

“Racers” began to grow in popularity through the late 1950s, and it was adopted as the official nickname in 1961 except by the baseball team which continued to be known as the Thoroughbreds or “Birds” until 2014. The women’s teams were known as Lady Racers until “Lady” was officially dropped in 2007

Murray State University Basketball

Murray State Racers men’s basketball program represents intercollegiate men’s basketball at Murray State University. The school competes in the Ohio Valley Conference in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and play home games at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky.

Murray State made its 16th appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2018. Three times the Racers advanced in the tournament, most recently when it defeated Colorado State in 2012. In 1988, Murray State defeated North Carolina State in the first round but lost to eventual national champion Kansas in the second round.

Murray State is known for its men’s basketball program, which has won 25 Ohio Valley Conference regular-season championships, 16 OVC Tournament championships, and made 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, most recently in 2022.

The tournament appearances included one win in 1988 the Racers defeated North Carolina State in the first round but lost to Kansas in the second round. In 2010, 22 years to the date of the 1988 win, the Racers beat the Vanderbilt Commodores and lost to the Butler Bulldogs in the second round.

The Murray State basketball program first competed in the 1925–1926 season under head coach Carlisle Cutchin. Murray State finished 9-5 in their inaugural season, with the first game being a 31-14 loss to Will Mayfield College.

From 1925 to 1941 Cutchin went on to lead the basketball team to a 296-96 record and three appearances in the NAIA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament, where the Thoroughbreds finished third in 1938 and second in 1941.

The Murray State basketball program has been recognized as one of the top 30 basketball programs in modern history by ESPN. The Racers are the highest true mid-major team in ESPN’s rankings.

The most well-known players in Racer history are Joe Fulks, Popeye Jones, Isaiah Canaan, and Cameron Payne. Fulks starred for two seasons at Murray State (1941–42 and 1942–43), twice earning All-Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors, before leaving school to join the Marines during World War II.

Murray State’s historic basketball rivalry is with nearby Western Kentucky. The two teams became archrivals during their time together in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Although the schools no longer share their conference affiliation, the rivalry game remains an annual event on each team’s schedule. The two teams have met in basketball 148 times. The Racers’ primary OVC rivalry is now with Austin Peay State University.

Murray State basketball has consistently been recognized as one of the best college basketball programs in the history of the sport

Murray State Basketball Facility

Murray State’s basketball facility used to be the Racer Arena which was opened in 1954 and entertained Racer fans for 43 years. While its capacity was 5,500, over 6,000 people crowded the arena on numerous occasions. Racer Arena is now a volleyball-only facility, the largest in NCAA Division I.

Racer Arena was later replaced by the CFSB Center, the current home of Murray State men’s basketball. Constructed in June 1998 at a cost of $20 million, the facility is a state-of-the-art arena which can host other events besides basketball.

The CFSB Center sits 8,602 and includes a $250,000 scoreboard and a 2,000 sq. ft. weight room. The first basketball game at the CFSB Center was against Southern Illinois on November 14, 1998, a 65-62 victory for the Racers in front of 7,633 spectators. It was formerly known as the Regional Special Events Center, or “RSEC”, until the name was changed on September 17, 2010.

The Murray State Racers football team represents Murray State University in the sport of American football. The Racers competes in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I and the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC).

The Murray State football program first competed on the gridiron in 1924. The first game was a 0-0 tie against Union University.

The Racers have had 45 winning seasons. Murray State has produced 33 All-American selections with 14 of them earning First Team All-American honors. Murray State’s largest margin of victory over another Division I program came in 1932 when the Racers defeated the Louisville Cardinals by a score of 105-0.

The Racers modern-day scoring record was set on October 9, 2010, with a 72-59 homecoming victory over the Missouri State Bears.

Murray State’s football rivalries have historically been with the Eastern Kentucky Colonels and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. The rivalry with the Hilltoppers began in 1931, and it later became an annual trophy game known as the Battle for the Red Belt.

The Murray State football program has become a steppingstone to major-college coaching success.

Murray State Football Facility

Murray State Racers football team has a facility which is known as the Roy Stewart Stadium; a 16,800-seat multi-purpose stadium in Murray, Kentucky. It opened in 1973 and is home to the Murray State University Racers football, rifle and women’s track and field teams. The stadium has the second largest seating capacity of any on-campus stadium in the Ohio Valley Conference.

The seven-floor structure is named after Roy Stewart, a longtime Murray State football coach, and athletics director. It features a FieldTurf surface surrounded by a nine-lane track. Inside the stadium are athletic offices, locker rooms and meeting rooms for football and track and field, as well as a training room and weight room.

Murray State University Baseball

Murray State baseball reached national prominence in the 1970s under Coach Johnny Reagan. The Thoroughbreds won or shared 11 conference titles during his 36-year tenure (1958–1993).

He also led Murray State to 27-straight winning seasons and it’s first two NCAA Division I Baseball Championship appearances, in 1975 and 1979. Murray State also reached the NCAA Regionals in 2003. Murray State’s 1975 team finished the season with a 40–9 record, was ranked No. 23 in Division I and led the nation in batting average (.332).

The 1979 team (27–10–2), ranked 17th in Division I, came one win from advancing to the College World Series. Murray State’s 1973 (19th) and 1974 (28th) teams also finished the season ranked in the NCAA poll.

Notable Murray State baseball alumni include Pat Jarvis, Jack Perconte, and Kirk Rueter.

Murray State University Athletics

Murray State competes only in women’s track and field. Historically, the track and field program included both men and women; however, in 2004 the men’s program was reduced to a non-scholarship program.

In October 2006, athletic director Allen Ward announced that the non-scholarship men’s track and field program was being eliminated, effective immediately. Murray State cited budgetarily and Title IX concerns as reasons for eliminating the men’s track and field program.

The men’s team had been exceptionally successful in competition, producing ten Olympic athletes, eleven instances of OVC Men’s Athlete of the Year honors, and 40 instances of NCAA Men’s All-America honors.

Murray State University Scholarships are awarded to students pursuing a graduate or undergraduate degree at Murray State University.

These scholarships provide a variety of academic, athletic, and service-based scholarship award opportunities to both domestic and international students. There are many different types of scholarships available.

International Academic Achievement Scholarships

This scholarship is awarded upon admission to new, first-year international bachelor’s students.

It is valued at approximately $1,500 to $11,724 per year and renewable for four years and available to self-funded students. Not available to government-sponsored students.

International Transfer Scholarships (New Transfers from US Colleges)

This scholarship has $2,000 scholarship awarded each semester for up to four semesters and requires a minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA AND at least 45 undergraduate credit hours from a college in the United States

Partner University Scholarships – (Not on Exchange)

This offer is awarded to students from partner universities and has about $2,500 Global Outreach Scholarship plus $2,500 Partner University Scholarship each semester

International Leadership Scholarships

International Leadership Scholarships are merit-based and are available for outstanding international students who demonstrate leadership abilities through community service experience, volunteering, and extracurricular activities. Scholarships are awarded for four years of undergraduate study or two years of graduate study. It involves the following;

Murray State University will award two annual, renewable scholarships that cover a minimum of 50% tuition for international undergraduate students starting in the Fall 2022 semester.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Scholarships

Murray State University will award a scholarship of $1,000 per year for all international students holding the IB Diploma. Newly admitted students will receive the scholarship upon submission of the official IB transcript showing that the student has been awarded the diploma with at least 24 points.

Scholarship for Citizens of Belize

Citizens of Belize who have studied or are currently studying at a COBEC member institution in Belize are eligible for the COBEC scholarship at Murray State University. This scholarship is awarded to students automatically without a separate scholarship application.

The scholarship for undergraduate students is valued at approximately $9,000 per year. The estimated tuition with the scholarship applied is $9,820 per year.

The scholarship for graduate students is valued at approximately $10,307 per year. The estimated tuition with the scholarship applied is $10,054 per year.

KEES Scholarship

This scholarship is offered to students that are Kentucky residents and is administered by the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA).  You do not have to apply for a KEES award. It is sent automatically to Murray State.  Disbursements of the KEES scholarship occur in early October for the fall semester and early March for the spring semester.

Early Childhood Development Scholarship

This scholarship is offered to students that are Kentucky residents and is administered by the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA). This scholarship provides financial assistance for Kentucky residents who are seeking certain child development degrees, certificates, or credentials.

United Nations Populations Fund internship in New York, USA

International Welcome Scholarships at Golden Gate University in USA, 2023

Applying for USA Student Visa

Generally, any visa applicant coming to the United States to attend an approved educational course of study requires a Student Visa.

Upon acceptance to a U.S. school the student plans to attend, the student will be enrolled in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

Instructions on completing the SEVIS I-901 fee and associated signatures through the SEVIS system will be provided by the U.S. school.

If you are attending an appointment in person, you must bring original documents. If you are eligible to send your documents via courier, you must send your current valid passport and the prior passport containing the most recently issued U.S Visa (if applicable), as well as the DS-160 confirmation page and copies of any other supporting documents. Please see the section below for a list of supporting documents required for each visa type.

additional requested documents for an in-person interview may include evidence of:

  • The purpose of your trip
  • Your intent to depart the United States after your trip; and/or
  • Your ability to pay for all the costs of your trip.
  • Evidence of your employment and/or family ties may be sufficient to show the purpose of your trip and your intent to return to your home country.
  • If you cannot cover all the costs for your trip, you may show evidence that another person will cover some or all of the costs for your trip.
