Some Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Who can apply?

High school seniors that are National Honor Society (NHS) members in good standing of an affiliated NHS chapter are eligible to apply for the scholarship. There are no limits to the number of applications to make per chapter.

What does “good standing” mean?

The phrase “seniors in good standing” basically mean members of the current graduating class who are continuing to meet the standards by which they were selected for membership and who are up to date on their charter obligations. Members should check with their National Honor Society advisers to confirm they are meeting all membership obligations.

How can NHS members apply?

National Honor Society advisers will be able to access application information on the NHS website in the fall. Each advisor is responsible for giving out the application procedures to eligible senior members. If you are eligible to apply, please ensure you speak with your adviser to obtain the application instructions.

Members can begin the online application process on October 1st, 2023. All applications must be accompanied by a minimum of three recommendations—one from the NHS adviser, one from the school principal, and a third from a faculty member of the student’s choice.

Applications are not considered complete until all components (the student application and three recommendations) have been completed and submitted by the published deadlines.

What are the application dates and deadlines for the National Honor Society Scholarship Program?

The application dates and deadlines for the 2023 program year are listed as follows:

October 1st, – Application process opens.
December 10th,  – Deadline for student applications. After this, student applications are “read-only.” No changes may be made.
December 14th, – Deadline for an adviser, principal, and faculty recommendations and certifications.

All completed materials should be submitted by 11:59 p.m. (CT). Applicants are responsible for verifying that all materials have been submitted.

Where can I find my affiliation number?

Your affiliation number is obtainable in your NASSP online account:

Click on My account

Click on the School name and the affiliation number will be on your dashboard.

With regard to the financial need as a consideration, do students have to receive free/reduced-price lunch in order to apply for the scholarship?

Students do not have to be participating in the National School Lunch Program, however, they must meet the income eligibility requirements if they indicate eligibility on their application.

The response to eligibility is optional. It is important to note that scholarship selection is done based on the four pillars of NHS—scholarship, service, leadership, and character—and financial need is also a consideration.

The indication of need is not exclusionary. If a student does not show financial need, he/she is still eligible to apply for, and possibly be awarded a scholarship.

When are scholarship winners announced?

Notification letters are sent via mails to winners and their principals in April. Chapter advisers are notified via email. Winners are also announced on their Scholarship Program page in June.

Students not selected to receive an award will be notified via email following the award acceptance deadline.

How do winners receive their award payments?

Scholarship checks will be sent by mails to applicants’ home addresses in August by International Scholarship and Tuition Services (ISTS). Applicants should ensure they list their complete mailing address on their application.

ISTS is a private company contracted by the NASSP to handle the processing of NHS Scholarship applications and NHS Scholarship funds.

Is the scholarship renewable?

No, this is a one-time award.

Do NHS Scholarships expire?

Yes. Scholarships expire after four years.

Are students required to use their entire award during their freshman year in college?

No, although they will receive the full amount of the award during their freshman year. The recipient and his/her college or university will decide how much of the amount to apply toward their freshman year.

If one plans on attending an international college or university. Can one still receive the award?

The award must be used at a United States college or university.
