Is Becoming a Physical Therapist Worth the Cost?

Regardless of your position in the debate about whether becoming a physical therapist is worth the cost, one thing remains constant, overall physical therapists in California continue to report high levels of job satisfaction.

In fact, the results of the survey revealed that, for the most part, Physical therapists appreciate their work and find it very rewarding.

However, many respondents also expressed concern about the direction of the profession as well as the health sector in general.

This should not be a surprise. After all, it has never been easier to be a Physical Therapist in terms of availability and overall demand.

Between the aging population and the rising cost of health care on the consumer side, patients with neuromusculoskeletal disorders are looking for effective, sustainable and less risky alternatives to surgery and other invasive treatments.

But, we are not saying that a career in physical therapy is 100% worth the financial investments.

According to the study, with the average report by recent US DPT graduates, physical therapy’s present net value ($86,563) is higher than an occupational therapist, optometry, veterinary medicine, and chiropractic.

But slightly lower than those of dentistry, pharmacy, nurse practitioner, medical assistant, and all medical specialties. But in all, they all have a much higher expected starting salary.

In fact, according to our survey, nearly 75% of students expect to earn between $60,001 and $80,000 in their first PT job after graduation. Which is also consistent with the current salary averages industry.

To put this into perspective, the amount of debt incurred by medical students throughout their studies is often comparable to or slightly higher than that of physical therapy students.

13. Western University of Health Sciences

Address: 450 E. Second St. Pomona, CA 91766

Brief Description

As interesting as it may sound, the truth remains that the Western University of Health Sciences, DPTE offers the opportunity to obtain a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree to two groups of students.

Firstly, their professional program is open to qualified candidates who wish to obtain their first professional degree in Physical Therapy.

Secondly, they also offer post-professional DPT to students who are registered and licensed physical therapists and have a bachelor’s degree, certificate or master’s degree in physical therapy. Moreover, these candidates enter the DPT program as students with advanced qualifications.

Furthermore, students in both programs use a variety of teaching methods. Including presentations and classroom discussions, laboratory experiments and Web-based online education.

In addition, the professional program also includes scattered clinical training experiences throughout the three-year program and culminates in 24 weeks of clinical training experiences.

Indeed, its post-professional DPT program offers courses that are not part of the certificate, license or master’s program.

Hence, to meet the busy schedules of working therapists, they offer web-based courses, complemented by intensive weekend seminars that require you to be on campus two or three times per semester.

Above all, the Professional Doctor of Physical Therapy program in the Department of Physical Therapy Education at Western University of Health Sciences, College of Health Sciences, is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE)

What is Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy includes the following:

1. Examining and evaluating patients with health-related conditions, impairments, functional limitations, and disability in order to determine diagnosis, prognosis, and intervention;
2. Alleviating impairments and functional limitations by designing, implementing, and modifying therapeutic interventions;
3. Preventing injury, impairments, functional limitations, and disability while promoting and maintaining fitness, health, and quality of life in all age populations; and
4. Engaging in consultation, education, and research.

What are the educational requirement for becoming a Physical Therapist (PT)?

All physical therapists must receive a graduate degree from an accredited physical therapist program before taking the national licensure exam that allows them to practice. Physical therapists have the most specialized education to help people restore and improve motion.

Today’s physical therapist is required to complete a graduate degree – either a masters or clinical doctorate – from an accredited education program. A growing majority of programs offer the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree.

What are the licensure requirement for becoming a PT?

After graduation, candidates must pass a state-administered national exam. Other requirements for Physical Therapy practice vary from state to state according to physical therapy practice acts or state regulations governing physical pherapy.

What is the employment outlook for Physical Therapy?

There is a high demand for physical therapists in the workforce despite the economic downturn. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of physical therapists is expected to grow by 30 percent from 2008 to 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations.

According to APTA, with just a 0.2 percent unemployment rate, physical therapists are now experiencing the best employment conditions since enactment of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. The need for PTs is expected to increase into the foreseeable future as the U.S. population ages and the demand for physical therapy services grows.

What do physical therapists earn?

More than 175,000 physical therapists are licensed in the U.S. today. The median salary for a physical therapist is $80,000 depending on position, years of experience, degree of education, geographic location, and practice setting.

Where do physical therapists practice?

Although many physical therapists practice in hospitals, nearly 80 percent practice in:

1. Outpatient clinics or offices
2. Inpatient rehabilitation facilities
3. Skilled nursing, extended care, or subacute facilities
4. Homes
5. Education or research centers
6. Schools
7. Hospices
8. Industrial, workplace, or other occupational environments
9. Fitness centers and sports training facilities

Are interviews a required part of the application process?

No. Formal interviews are not a required part of the admissions process, but the admissions committee may contact an applicant to clarify questions they have during the application review process.

When should I take the GRE? Can I retake the exam?

Applicants should take the GRE any time before the end of November. If an applicant does not receive a combined minimum score of 300, it is highly recommended that the applicant retake the exam in December to improve their admissions credentials. Applicants should keep the admissions coordinator updated as to the status of their GRE scores.

Does the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy offer scholarships?

Yes. There are a limited number of competitive, merit-based scholarships awarded to students throughout the three-year program. All incoming students are considered for these awards, and there is no need to submit a formal application. In past years, 10 to 15 incoming students were awarded scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 for the first year. Scholarships are awarded to second- and third-year students based on their meritorious academic and clinical performance.

Can I apply to your program if I am still in the process of completing my Bachelor’s Degree?

Yes, many people apply while they are in the last semester of their Bachelor’s Degree. Acceptance into the program is conditional upon successful completion of the degree (and any prerequisite courses still in progress) at least two weeks prior to the start of the Fall Semester in which they would begin attending classes in the PT Program.

What degree do I need to have in order to enroll in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program?

All applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Although any undergraduate major is acceptable, for students in the initial stages of undergraduate preparation, a major in Kinesiology or the biological sciences tends to be the most direct route into a physical therapy program.

Does Chapman require a supplemental application?

No, Chapman does not require an additional supplemental application.

Does the physical therapy program or Chapman University provide scholarships for students?

Yes, the physical therapy department offers minimal fellowships as a non-renewable award for one’s outstanding academic profile. All candidates who matriculate into the entry level
DPT program will be considered. Please vist the APTA website for other scholarships and grants.

How long is the DPT program and can the program be taken online?

The program is full-time, 36 months long, on a trimester system (15 weeks each trimester).  Chapman does not offer an online entry level DPT program.
