The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) is the federal government agency responsible for developing local human capacity and oil technology to meet the needs of the oil and gas industry.

Currently, PTDF invites applications from well-qualified candidates for Masters and Doctorate Scholarships abroad in institutions of the United Kingdom-Germany Strategic Partnership Initiative.

Therefore, it is important you apply immediately because applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.

To ensure a steadfast implementation of this mandate, PTDF is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates for Overseas and in-country MSc and Ph.D. Scholarships. 

Awards will be granted for studies in the 2023 academic session in the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil, France (through Campus France), Top Institutions in the United States of America as well as Federal Universities and Centres of Excellence in Nigeria.

PTDF SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION FORMS

PTDF Scholarship Application forms can be accessed online HERE using an ATM (Interswitch, Master & Visa) card or through the purchase of a scratch card from designated main branches of First Bank of Nigeria Plc in all the 36 States and FCT upon payment of a NON-REFUNDABLE sum of N1,000 (One Thousand Naira Only).

Instructions on accessing the form online are clearly stated on the backside of the cards.

Applicants may please note that only those who meet the requirements below shall be shortlisted and invited for a Computer-Based Aptitude Test, in the case of MSc applicants.

At the same time, oral interview will be conducted for PhD applicants (full time and Split-site) on dates to be announced later.

Following the aptitude tests and interview, successful candidates will be selected and awarded the PTDF Scholarship.

PTDF Overseas Scholarship Application

PTDF scholarships are highly competitive and only outstanding candidates across the board are selected.

The 2023 PTDF scholarship received 19,232 applications. A selection committee will be constituted to assess applications using the following criteria;

  • Academic merit as evidenced by the quality of degrees, full academic transcripts, other professional qualifications acquired, and relevant publications to be referenced by the applicant (Ph.D. applicants only)
  • Membership of professional bodies
  • The viability of the study/research plan.
  • Applicants must make a case for their scholarship by submitting a statement of purpose (maximum 500 words) stating the reason(s) they want to undertake the study, the relevance of the proposed study to the industry, and its expected impact on national development.

Applicants for OSS must own the following:

  1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)(USA)
  2. G.R.E (Graduate Record Examination) (USA)
  3. GMAT –for Management related courses (USA)
  4. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (UK

PTDF Masters Scholarships 2023

The Scheme

  • Under this scheme, candidates are invited to apply through PTDF to specific programs at the partner institutions in any country (full list of sponsored courses is available below).
  • The award includes the provision of flight tickets, payment of health insurance, payment of tuition and bench fees (where applicable) as well as the provision of allowances to meet the costs of accommodation and living expenses.
  • The programs will also include language classes to aid scholars to settle into their new environments.

Eligibility for PTDF Local Scholarships

PTDF scholarships are highly competitive and only outstanding candidates are selected. A selection committee will be constituted to assess applications using the following criteria:

  • Academic merit as evidenced by the quality of degrees, full academic transcripts, other professional qualifications acquired, and relevant publications (where available) to be referenced by applicants
  • Awards for leadership and/or academic excellence (where available).
  • Membership of professional bodies
  • The viability of the study/research plan.
  • Applicants are required to make a case for their scholarship by submitting a statement of purpose (maximum 500 words) stating the reason(s) they want to undertake the study, the relevance of the proposed study to the oil & gas industry and its expected impact on national development.

PTDF Postgraduate Scholarships Requirements

  • A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) in an Oil and Gas related field OR a 2.2 with oil and gas industry experience;
  • National Youth Service (NYSC) certificate;
  • Applicants must be computer literate;
  • Possession of O/level with Credit in English Language; (At least C6 in WAEC/SSCE or C4 and above in NECO); and
  • Applicants must not be above 30 years of age.

For 2023, the scholarships will be restricted to select courses (available on the PTDF website)

The study centers for the scholarship awards are universities in the United Kingdom, China, Germany, France, and the United States.

PTDF Ph.D. Scholarships in 2023

  • A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) in an Oil and Gas related field OR a 2.2 with oil and gas industry experience;
  • National Youth Service (NYSC) certificate;
  • Applicants must be computer literate;
  • Possession of O/level with Credit in English Language; (At least C6 in WAEC/SSCE or C4 and above in NECO); and
  • Employment in the academics in reputable Nigerian Institution, teaching oil and gas related disciplines;
  • A minimum of 2.2 in their first degree and a minimum of merit as a second-degree certificate in an oil and gas-related discipline;
  •  Submit a research proposal relevant to the oil and gas industry (of not more than 5 pages) to include: Topic, introduction, objective, methodology relevance to the industry and mode of data collection;
  •   Possess a valid admission letter; and
  •   Must not be over 40 years of age

Is PTDF scholarship still on?


The closing date for the application is Friday, March 24th, 2023 (Six weeks from the date of this publication). The PTDF Scholarship application deadline is always 6 weeks after the opening date. Therefore, all interested candidates are encouraged to apply before the deadline.

How do I get a PTDF scholarship?


MSc Requirements
A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) qualification in their first degree or a Second Class Lower (2.2) with relevant industry experience.
Must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC)
Must be computer literate.
Possession of 5 O/level credits, including English Language and Mathematics.

How much is PTDF scholarship worth?


The award provides a sum of $30,000 to cover tuition, living stipends, and other requisite expenses spent on books, research journal subscriptions, and other needs.
