English is the language of instruction at SFU. All applicants, regardless of their country of origin or their citizenship status, must have showed English proficiency before admission.

As an undergraduate applicant, you must demonstrate English proficiency in one of the following ways:

  • Completion of the last three (3) years of full-time high school in English in Canada
  • A minimum grade of 70% in higher level English is required.

Or

  • Completion of the last three (3) years of full-time secondary education in English in a country where the primary language of instruction is English.

Or

  • Completion of the last four (4) years of full-time secondary education in English at a recognized international school in a country where the primary language of instruction is not English

Or

  • Completion of the IB diploma program, which includes English A (HL / SL) or Literature and performance in English (SL) with a minimum score of 3

Or

  • Complete an English course in three units (ENGL) or a W (intensive writing) certified course for which SFU grants transfer credits, with a minimum grade of C-

A satisfactory score on one of the following English proficiency tests:

  • International English Language Test System (IELTS – Academic) with a minimum overall score of 6.5 without a part lower than 6.0.
  • TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a foreign language on the Internet) with an overall score of 88. Or better with a minimum score of 20 in each of the four components (listening, speaking, writing, reading)
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) with an overall score of 70, with no less than 60.
  • Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE Academic) with an overall score of 65. And a minimum score of 60 for communication skills, including listening, reading, speaking, writing.

Quantitative and Analytical Skills Requirement

As a candidate for an SFU university program, you must demonstrate proficiency in quantitative and analytical skills.

You must demonstrate this ability in one of the following ways:

  • Have a minimum grade of 60% or C in a higher-level math course or pre-calculation
  • A minimum score of 3 in IB mathematics (HL / SL), mathematical analysis and approaches (HL / SL), mathematical applications or interpretations (HL / SL) or mathematical studies (SL)
  • A minimum grade D in mathematics at the GCE A or AS level; or a minimum of grade C in maths or GCSE level
  • Have a grade of C- or better in a 3-unit certified (quantitative) math or Q course that is transferred to SFU (for college and university transfer students).
