Universities in Montenegro

There are three universities in the country namely;

• University of Montenegro
• The University Donja Gorica
• University Mediteran

They are all located in the capital of Podgorica. The biggest and most internationally recognized is the University of Montenegro. This is a government-owned University. The other two are not-for-profit private schools.

Overview of the University of Montenegro

The University of Montenegro, Podgorica, was established in 1974 and has two other campuses in Kotor and Niksic. The university offers various undergraduate, post-graduate, and graduate courses in many areas of study.

The 17 faculties cater to a student population of about 20,000-25,000. Whether privately funded or on special scholarships, international students are welcome to apply.

Tuition for international students

• Undergraduates –  about €750 per year
• Postgraduate – between €750 and £1800 per year

Note that the Tuition fee does not include fees for room, boarding, and other costs. The tuition also depends on the type of course you are studying, and the year of study, among other factors.

Admission requirements

Undergraduate students must submit original copies of their birth certificate and high school diploma (secondary school certificate).

The University Senate meets to determine the number of international students to offer admission to each faculty.

Postgraduate studies – Intending students must submit transcripts of undergraduate studies, birth certificates, and other relevant documents to the Ministry of Education and Science for validation.

Accommodation

The University has halls of residence for students on all campuses. However, the number of rooms available for international students is limited.

Most student though lives in rented accommodation. The cost depends on the location and distance from the school. Generally, the range is between €80 and €400 per month. To cut costs, students can explore the option of sharing studio apartments.

• Residence halls: This type of accommodation is affordable and has all the necessary facilities.

Transport

There is an efficient public transport system in Podgorica. Tickets bought from the bus driver cost €0.5. Taxis, too, are very cheap, costing a maximum of €1.3 for a single trip.
