Chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas and affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas, Baylor is both the state’s oldest institution of higher learning and the world’s largest Baptist University.

Established to be a servant of the church and of society, Baylor seeks to fulfill its calling through excellence in teaching and research, in scholarship and publication, and in service to the community, both local and global.

The vision of its founders and the ongoing commitment of generations of students and scholars are reflected in the motto inscribed on the Baylor seal: Pro Ecclesia, Pro Texana — For Church, For Texas.

Baylor University is founded on the belief that God’s nature is made known through both revealed and discovered the truth. Baylor University Football

The Baylor Bears football team represents Baylor University in Division I FBS college football. They are a member of the Big 12 Conference. After 64 seasons at the off-campus Floyd Casey Stadium, the Bears opened the new on-campus McLane Stadium for the 2014 season.

Initially, starting in the year 1898, the university played its home games on an unnamed field near the university campus. Beginning in 1905, the team’s home games were played at Carroll Field, between the Carroll Science Building and Waco Creek.

Baylor did not adopt a mascot (the Baylor Bears) until December 14, 1914, after the completion of the 1914 football season. Additionally, Baylor did not join an athletic conference until 1914 after the conclusion of the football season, when it became a founding member of the Southwest Conference.

Baylor played its first home game against Toby’s Business College (located in Waco) in 1899, its first away game on 4 November 1900, at Austin College, and its first neutral-site game against Texas A&M in 1901.

For the 1899 and 1900 seasons, the team was coached by R.H. Hamilton, whose 5–1–1 record was distinguished with never having a losing record; in 1899, Baylor played, and lost, its first game against Texas A&M, which would become a rivalry (until 2012 when Texas A&M changed conferences), the Battle of the Brazos, with over 100 games played in the series by 2003.

Baylor has many traditions such as the Baylor-TCU rivalry game which is one of the most played in all of college football, the Battle of the Brazos (through 2011 when Texas A&M left the Big 12), membership in the historic Southwest Conference, a live bear mascot since 1915 and the Baylor Line.

In 1966, John Hill Westbrook of Elgin, Texas became the first African American to play varsity football in the Southwest Conference when he joined the Baylor team.

Baylor University Mascot

On December 14, 1914, the students of Baylor voted to have a bear represent the university as a mascot. Among the mascots nominated were buffalo, eagle, antelope, bookworm, and bear. The bear won by little more than half of the 406 votes cast. Since then more than 50 North American Black Bears have called Baylor home.

In the fall of 1917, Baylor saw the arrival of the first live mascot to campus. The 107th Engineer Battalion from Camp MacArthur in Waco donated the bear to Baylor. His name was Ted but it was often called “Bruin”.

Joe College, the 4th mascot, came to campus in 1931. A statue of Joe stands on campus outside of the McLane Student Life Center. During Joe’s time at Baylor, the Baylor Chamber of Commerce assumed responsibility of the developing mascot tradition.

In 1974, the decision was made for the mascots to be called “Judge” followed by a surname, in honor of the mascot that served Baylor from 1961 to 1971. This title also honors the university’s namesake, Judge Robert E.B. Baylor.

The bears have and continue to serve a wonderful function here at Baylor; they are much more than a mascot. They primarily help educate people about black bears but also serve as a symbol of the university.

During their time here, they receive the best care possible. Student leaders from the Baylor Chamber of Commerce are chosen by Baylor Administration to lead the Bear Program.

Many other students within Chamber serve alongside those leaders to provide the best atmosphere for the bears. These students compose the Bear Committee. This committee is responsible for the care and training of the current mascots, the maintenance of the habitat, and the future of the program.

The students that work with Joy and Lady are professionally trained each year by a professional bear trainer (that specializes in the movie industry). The bears enjoy what they do here at Baylor and we, in turn, respect and love them.

2017 marked the 100 year anniversary of Ted arriving on campus. Fifty-four years later, Joy and Lady – the current mascots – carry on this long-standing tradition. Baylor and the Bear Program are looking forward to another 100 years!

The Official Mascot of Baylor University, the “Patron Saint of all Baylordom,” the Bear has served as the Baylor Mascot since 1914 when students selected it over the Buffalo, Antelope, Frog, Ferret, and Bookworm.

Baylor University Athletics

Baylor student-athletes participate in NCAA Division I as part of the Big 12 Conference. In case you don’t know. Baylor men’s sports teams are named the Bears, and most women’s teams are named the Lady Bears.

In the 2011–2012 season, Baylor broke the NCAA record for most combined wins in the four major collegiate sports: baseball, football, and men’s and women’s basketball.

The university has won NCAA titles in 2004, 2005 and 2012. The men’s tennis team defeated UCLA in the 2004 championship match to garner the Baylor’s first title. One year later, the Baylor Lady Bears basketball team beat Michigan State in the championship game and was subsequently named as the only women’s team to be nominated for a 2005 “Best Team” ESPY.

In 2012, the Baylor Lady Bears basketball team beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the NCAA National Championship; the first college basketball team to ever finish with a perfect 40-0 record. Really incredible!

The Baylor men’s basketball team advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA ‘March Madness’ Championship tournament in 2010 and 2012. Under the direction of head coach Scott Drew, Baylor achieved a record of 121-55 (.688) between the 2008–2012 seasons and reached post-season play in four of those years.
