About Howard University

Howard University (HU, in short) is a private historically black research university in the United States of America and accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

HU offers various undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees in over 120 study areas. The school has produced a Marshall Scholar, two Truman Scholars, four Rhodes Scholars, twenty-two Fulbright Scholars, and ten Pickering Fellows all between 1986 and 2017.

The campus is also home to the Howard University Gallery of Art. The School has also been named the second best-dressed college in the United States by the Huffington Post in recent years and the university’s nonsectarian reputation also makes for a fascinating blend of cultures, customs, and languages which has been said to be unparalleled in any other university campus in the world.

Howard Demographics

HU has always distinguished itself as a nonsectarian institution that is open to people of all sexes and races. HU has a student population of nearly 11,000 students with a total undergraduate enrollment of 5,899 students.

This historically black college (HBCU) which has the highest concentration of black scholars in the world, with 86.1% of its student body African-American/Black, is also home to a rapidly increasing number of scholars from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, South, and Central America.

It comprises students from all the 50 states of the nation with regional distribution of New England at 2%, Mid-West at 8%. South 22%, Mid-Atlantic 55%, and West 12%, and over 100 countries, with its international students making up about 4% of the total student population.

HU also has a gender distribution of 33 percent male students and 67 percent female students.

Howard Majors

Howard University uses a semester-based academic calendar. The university comprises thirteen (13) schools and colleges which include;

The College of Engineering and Architecture, College of Nursing & Allied Health Sciences, College of Pharmacy, Howard University College of Arts and Sciences, Howard University College of Dentistry, and Howard University School of Business.

Also, Howard University School of Communications, Howard University College of Medicine, Howard University School of Law, Middle School of Mathematics and Science, School of Divinity, School of Education, and the School of Social Work.

According to the official school’s website, since its founding in 1867, Howard has been awarded over 120,000 degrees and certificates in the arts, the sciences, and the humanities.

With over 120 study areas available for students at the university, its most popular majors because of the average number of graduates produced are; Biology with 148 Graduates; Parks, Recreation and Leisure Studies with 137 Graduates; Communications with 118 Graduates.

Also, Political Science and Government 92 Graduates; Psychology 86 Graduates; Journalism 82 Graduates; Business Support Services had 59 Graduates; Marketing 44 Graduates; Health Care Management 43 Graduates; and Finance with 40 Graduates produced.

Howard Ranking

Howard is classified as a Tier 1 national university and ranks second among HBCUs by U.S. News & World Report. It’s National Universities ranking is 110 in the 2018 edition of Best Colleges by US News and World Reports.

It is the 2nd best among seventy-four HBCU schools in the United States, It ties as #62 in High School Counselor Rankings and it is ranked #75 in Best Value Schools.

Howard is the only HBCU ranked in the top 75 on the Bloomberg Businessweek college rankings.

The Princeton Review also ranked the Howard school of business first in opportunities for minority students and among the top five for most competitive students.

The National Law Journal also ranked among the top 25 in the nation for placing graduates at the most successful law firm Howard’s Law School.

Howard Admissions, Acceptance Rate & Tuition

Howard University is recognized as a higher education institution with a selective admissions reputation.

The acceptance rate at HU is at an average of 30 percent with the incoming freshman class admitting 6,616 (31%) of the 20,946 applications it received for the fall of 2018. The early acceptance rate is 43.7 percent. The SAT Range of students accepted into Howard is 1040-1240 while the ACT Range is 22-28.

HU has a financial endowment of $685.8 million. The average cost of Tuition and Fees after financial aid for students receiving grants or scholarship aid is $25,697.

A few years ago, 1,270 (86%) of the 1,476 full-time freshmen enrolled in various programs at the university were found to have financial needs. Of these numbers, Howard could meet the full financial aid needs of 316 freshmen.

When applying to Howard University, it’s important to note the application deadline for regular decision is Feb. 15, and the early decision deadline is Nov. 1. The application fee at Howard University is $45 through a Common Application fee waiver that can be requested for students facing unusual financial hardship.

Howard Athletics and Football

The Howard Athletics team is known as the Bison and Lady Bison and comprises 19 NCAA Division I men’s & women’s varsity sports.

The athletics programs represent five conferences: the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Sun Belt Conference, Atlantic Sun Conference, Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA).

The Howard Bison football team represents Howard University in college football. Playing in their traditional Navy Blue and White colors, they have represented in the NCAA Division I Football Championship as a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

The Bisons play their home games in the 10,000-capacity William H. Greene Stadium has since gone on to claim 5 national titles and 3 conference titles since its debut season in 1893. The Howard Bison holds strong rivalries with Hampton, Morehouse, Morgan State, and Georgetown Football teams.
