Pursuing a veterinary medicine or animal science career can be costly in today’s higher learning environment. Luckily, there are many scholarships which in different ways, help you cover the costs whether you are pursuing a DVM or an undergraduate degree.

The scholarships compiled for this list represent a small number of the total scholarships available to students enrolled in or attending veterinary school or studying animal science at a graduate or undergraduate level.

Scholarships are offered from various institutions, such as Future Farmers of America and the American Veterinary Medicine Association.

Scholarships are generally based on academic excellence as well as financial need, though many other criteria may apply, depending on the award.

#1. Zoetis/AAVMC Veterinary Student Scholarship Program:

Second and third-year veterinary students are eligible for the Zoetis and Association of American Veterinary Medical College scholarship.

Eligible students must demonstrate academic excellence as well as financial need, in addition to other qualifications, for the $2000 scholarship.

Scholarships are awarded annually in small animal clinical medicine, research, government services, and organized veterinary medicine.

#2. F. Edward Hebert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program:

The F. Edward Hebert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program requires that veterinary school recipients become active-duty officers in the U.S upon graduation.

Army for three years, followed by five years of reserve duty, starting as a Second Lieutenant. While the obligation is not minimal, the rewards are significant since this scholarship covers veterinary school tuition, books, fees, a stipend, and a U.S. Army officer salary.

#3.  Merck Animal Health Veterinary Student Scholarship Program:

With the AVMF, Merck Animal Health sponsors annual scholarships for $5000 for second and third-year veterinary students.

The scholarships are available to both U.S. and international students.

#4. AVMF/Winn Feline Foundation Scholarship:

Third and fourth-year veterinary students can apply for the AVMF/Winn Feline Foundation Scholarship, which is directed towards those with a particular interest in feline veterinary medicine.

Applicants must have a history of work with cats and towards cat welfare, such as research, shelter work, and other community service.

Winning students are awarded $2500 annually.

#5. AAEP Winner’s Circle Scholarship:

For those veterinary students studying equine medicine who have participated in the Student Chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (SCAAEP), the AAEP offers an annual $1500 scholarship.

Applicants must complete an essay application that includes career goals and an explanation about how the applicant will impact the field of equine veterinary medicine.

Applicants must also demonstrate financial need.

#6. Association for Women Veterinarians Foundation Legacy Scholarship:

To encourage and support female veterinary students, the Association for Women Veterinarians Foundation endows an annual scholarship for second and third-year veterinary students who are women.

The amount of the scholarship varies.

#7. Allan Eldin & Agnes Sutorik Geiger Scholarship Fund:

Residents of Hawai’i who are also veterinary students are eligible for the Allan Eldin & Agnes Sutorik Geiger Scholarship Fund, sponsored by the Hawai’i Community Foundation.

The amount awarded to applicants who demonstrate strong academic credentials and financial need varies from year to year and person to person.

#8. Dr. Elinor McGrath Scholarship:

Female veterinary students in their first, second, or third year can apply for the $500 Elinor McGrath scholarship.

Named for the first female admitted to the American Veterinary Medical Association, applicants must demonstrate that they have achieved veterinary goals with the same strength and determination that Dr. McGrath demonstrated time and again.

#9. John D. Spurling OBE Scholarship:

The American Kennel Club (AKC) Humane Fund sponsors the annual John D. Spurling OBE Scholarship, awarded to students pursuing any study course promoting responsible pet ownership.

The scholarship funds $10,000 each year to up to five students.

#10. Mildred Sylvester Scholarship:

Students in their first, second or third year of veterinary school are eligible to apply for the $1000 Mildred Sylvester Scholarship, which Ms. Sylvester’s estate endowed.

Students must have a connection to the state of New Jersey to be eligible.

The connection could include past or present residency or graduation from a New Jersey school.

#11. Harold Wetterberg Foundation Scholarship:

Residents of New Jersey have a few options for scholarship opportunities.

The Harold Wetterberg Foundation Scholarship is available to current and former New Jersey residents in conjunction with the AVMF.

#12. Saul T. Wilson, Jr., Internship:

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers an internship program that includes a scholarship component of $5000 for undergraduate applicants and $10000 for graduate students.

Those who enroll in the internship will gain hands-on experience with veterinary medicine, particularly livestock.

#13. Susan M. Roman Veterinary Scholarship:

Second and third-year veterinary students are eligible to apply for the Susan M. Roman Veterinary Scholarship from the Ovarian Cancer Symptom Awareness Organization.

Preference is given to applicants who have been impacted by ovarian cancer.

#14. Janelle Downing Memorial 4-H Scholarship:

Missouri students who are current or former members of 4-H are eligible for this Janelle Downing Memorial 4-H Scholarship.

The $1000 scholarship is awarded annually and preference is given to those enrolling at the University of Missouri College of Agriculture.

#15. American Holistic Veterinary Medical Foundation Scholarship:

Students that wish to attend the annual American Holistic Veterinary Medicine Association Annual Conference in Augusta, Georgia can apply for that organization’s scholarship.

Applicants must be enrolled in a College of Veterinary Medicine as well as an essay to receive an expense-paid trip.

Note that the AHVMF also offers several other scholarships (some taking the form of a cash award to put toward veterinary higher education such as scholarship 21 below, others being conference awards like this one, which covers the cost of conference attendance).

#16. Thoroughbred Scholarship:

Anyone pursuing an education in the equine or agriculture industry is eligible for the Thoroughbred Scholarship from the Race for Education Foundation.

Up to $6000 per year is awarded to students under 24 years old with a minimum 2.85 cumulative GPA.

#17.  Isaac Murphy Scholarship:

The Isaac Murphy Scholarship awardee will be chosen from the Thoroughbred Scholarship applicants.

This applicant must also want to pursue an equine-related career and must be African American.

#18.  John R. Velazquez Scholarship:

The John R. Velazquez Scholarship awardee will be chosen from the Thoroughbred Scholarship applicants.

This applicant must also want to pursue an equine-related career and must be Hispanic.

#19.  Richard Kearns Scholarship:

Students interested in holistic veterinary medicine can apply for the Richard Kearns Scholarship through the AHVMF.

The annual award is $1500 to further the student’s education in holistic medicine.

#20. Bayer Excellence in Communication Award:

At 28 veterinary schools around the country, $72,500 are awarded each year as part of the Bayer Excellence in Communication scholarship program.

Each winning student is awarded $2500 with a national winner receiving an additional $2500.

#21. Nashville Veterinarian Scholarship Award:

Nippers Corner Pet Medical Center sponsors the annual Nashville Veterinarian Scholarship Award.

Available to any veterinary student in the U.S. with a GPA of at least 3.0, the $1000 scholarship takes into account academic excellence, character, and leadership.

#22. Oxbow Animal Health Exotic Animal Interest Scholarship:

Although many scholarships are available to those pursuing a DVM degree, fewer are available for Veterinary Technicians.

This $500 award is available to two veterinary technology students each year who demonstrate a distinct interest in exotic animal medicine.

#23. OSVS Compassionate Care Veterinary Scholarship:

The Rhode Island Veterinary Medicine Association sponsors the annual OSVS Compassionate Care Veterinary Scholarship.

The $2500 scholarship is awarded to a student who has shown a dedicated interest in animal welfare, animal rights, and animal protection issues and is in their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year of veterinary school.

Though it is not required, preference is given to students who have graduated from a Rhode Island high school or college.

#24. RIVMA Veterinary Student Scholarship:

Specifically offered to graduates of a Rhode Island high school, the RIVMA Veterinary Student Scholarship weighs academic excellence and financial need in awarding its $1000, which is available to juniors entering their senior year.

#25. NVMA Centennial Scholarship Foundation:

The Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association awards an annual scholarship to a student pursuing a veterinary education who has graduated from a Nebraska high school or home school program.

The amount of the award varies but is no less than $250.

Applicants must have completed at least two semesters of their veterinary education

#26. NVMA Pre-Veterinary Scholarship:

Pre-veterinary students who are still pursuing their undergraduate education, and who have graduated from a Nebraska high school or home school program are eligible to apply for the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association Pre-Veterinary Scholarship.

The amount of the award varies but is no less than $500.

#27. Dr. Joseph and Sonia Landholm Scholarship:

Not all veterinary educations have the same focus.

The Lindholm scholarship is specifically available to those students with an interest in obtaining training in veterinary acupuncture.

Veterinary students, as well as licensed practitioners from Nebraska, are eligible for this $4500 reimbursement-based scholarship

#28. Veterinary Scholarship Trust of New England:

The Veterinary Scholarship Trust of New England awards a range of scholarships to veterinary students who are from one of the 6 New England States.

While there are smaller awards, the main VSTONE scholarship is $5000 and one is available to the top applicant from each state.

#29. Dog Fence DIY Veterinary & Pre-Veterinary Scholarship:

Dog fence company Dog Fence DIY began to sponsor an annual scholarship for both graduate and undergraduate veterinary students.

The scholarship is in the amount of $2000, distributed in $500 increments throughout the school year.

Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and submit an essay.

#30. Ed Hiestand Memorial Veterinary Student Scholarship:

Veterinary students wishing to further pursue academia would do well to apply for the Ed Hiestand Memorial Veterinary Student Scholarship.

The winner will present a paper on wildlife rehabilitation at the annual National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association Symposium.

$500 will be awarded to cover travel expenses.

#31. Maine Veterinary Education Foundation Scholarship Program:

Students from Maine who have completed at least one year of veterinary school or one year of a veterinary technology program can apply for the Maine Veterinary Education Foundation Scholarship.

The amount of the scholarship varies, but in 2014 $32,500 total scholarship dollars were awarded to five students.

#32. CME Group Beef Industry Scholarship:

Veterinarians and animal science specialists are in high demand in the agricultural field.

The National Cattlemen’s Association offers a scholarship to undergraduates and graduating high school students who plan to pursue a career in the beef industry.

A total of 10 $1500 scholarships are awarded each year

#33. Church and Dwight Company Inc. FFA Scholarship:

Current members of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) are eligible to apply for the Church & Dwight Company Inc. Scholarship.

Students must be pursuing a degree in animal nutrition, animal or dairy science, agricultural business management, finance, sales, and marketing or agricultural engineering, and a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.

#34. Iager Two Year College Dairy Scholarship:

Students who are in their second year of the accredited animal science or dairy program are eligible to apply for the $1000 Iager Two Year College Dairy Scholarship.

Students must be attending a two-year agricultural school and are judged based on academic standing, leadership ability, interest in the dairy industry, and plans for the future

#35. N.DS/Klussendorf/McKown Scholarships:

Seven scholarships of $1500 are awarded each year as part of the NDS/Klussendorf/McKown Scholarships.

Interested applicants must major in dairy science, animal science, agriculture business, or a related major and plan to pursue a career in the dairy industry.

#36. J. Wayne Rehn Scholarship:

The Alpha Gamma Rho agricultural fraternity sponsors the J. Wayne Rehn Scholarship for pre-veterinary or animal science students.

The $1000 scholarship award is only available to students who live in the fraternity house.

#37. Morris Animal Foundation Veterinary Student Scholars:

Those veterinary students who are interested in hands-on experience can apply for the Morris Animal Foundation Veterinary Student Scholars program.

Winners get hands-on experience with animal research and receive a $4000 stipend in return for dedicating 10 to 12 weeks to their research project.

#38. California American Registry of Professional Animal Science Scholarship:

Graduate students pursuing an education in animal, dairy, or poultry science are eligible for the CA ARPAS scholarship in the amount of $2000.

Candidates must be from California, Oregon, Arizona, or Nevada and demonstrate an interest in a career in dairy nutrition.

#39. Patricia M. Lowrie Diversity Leadership Scholarship:

The AAVMC sponsors the Patricia M. Lowrie Diversity Leadership Scholarship.

The award of $6000 is available to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-year students who have demonstrated promise as future leaders and have contributed to enhancing diversity and community engagement.

#40. The Iowa Pork Foundation Scholarship:

The Iowa Pork Foundation sponsors an annual scholarship available to incoming freshmen as well as returning students majoring in animal science and planning to pursue a career in pork production.

The scholarship comes in the amount of $1500 and only Iowa residents are eligible.

#41. Jay Pumphrey Animal Sciences Scholarship:

Ideal candidates for the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Jay Pumphrey Animal Science Scholarship come from Texas and have a ranching background.

The $6000 scholarship is open to those with a 3.0 GPA who plan to major in animal science or pursue another animal-related degree.

#42. Margaret A. Haines Telephony Scholarship:

In one of the larger veterinary scholarships available, the Margaret A. Haines Telephony Scholarship, sponsored by the AQHA, is in the amount of $35,000.

The scholarship is available to veterinary students who are in at least their third year of veterinary school and pursuing equine medicine and/or surgery.

#43. USDA 1890 National Scholars Program:

Animal science students are eligible to apply for the USDA 1890 National Scholars Program, which offers full-tuition awards at a number of accredited Historically Black Land-Grant Universities around the country, including Florida A&M University, Tennessee State University, and Virginia State University.

#44. DeForest Kelley/Dr. Leonard McCoy Memorial Medical & Veterinarian Scholarship:

The DeForest Kelley/Dr. Leonard McCoy Memorial Medical & Veterinarian Scholarship is awarded by Starfleet, a Star Trek fan club each year in the amount of $500.

Applicants must be members of Starfleet, which also provides the funds via its membership.

#45. Laboratory Animal Management Foundation Scholarship:

Animal science students may apply for the Laboratory Animal Management Association (LAMA) scholarship.

Students must be enrolled in a full-time graduate program to be eligible for an award of up to $2000 and must have the goal of becoming a laboratory animal science professional.

#46. Louis Agassiz Fuertes Award:

Graduate students and young professionals are eligible for the Louis Agassiz Fuertes grant of up to $2500.

This grant is available only to ornithologists.

#47. Marshall E. McCullough Scholarship:

Graduating high school seniors who plan to major in dairy science or animal science are eligible for the Marshall E. McCullough Scholarship through Dairy Shrine.

Volunteerism and extra-curricular activities are taken into account in addition to academic performance and leadership.

#48. Oregon Dairy Women Scholarship:

Daughters of Oregon farmers who have worked on a dairy farm are eligible for the Oregon Dairy Women Scholarship.

If not, applicants must be majoring in animal science, veterinary medicine, food science, nutrition, or another area related to dairy farming.

The scholarship is in the amount of $2500.
