Students with the following tri-agency scholarships automatically become 4YF designates:

Nomination Procedures
Each graduate program receives an amount of Four Year Fellowships each year. Graduate programs examine their incoming and continuing students and offer Four Year Doctoral Fellowships to their best students, giving priority to incoming students.
Graduate programs notify Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies which students have been chosen to receive a Four Year Fellowship by submitting a signed University Award Recommendation Form, listing award number 6456.
It is not necessary to list an award amount. Recommendation forms should be submitted at least eight weeks before the requested 4YF start date.
Adjudication Procedures
4YF holders must request other financings to maintain their eligibility for 4YF financing.
(a) 4YF holders who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents must request funds from all three organizations each year if they are eligible. If they do not, they will lose their remaining 4YF funding.
(b) 4YF winners who are international students are not required to submit an application for the annual affiliate scholarship competition (which is held each fall) but are eligible to do so if they wish to compete for affiliate scholarships with higher grants (such as the Killam doctoral scholarship).
