UCT Faculty of Health Sciences Research Grants in South Africa, 2018

Applications are invited for Faculty of Health Sciences – Research Equipment Infrastructure Grants at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. South African applicants are eligible to apply for this grant.

The purpose of this round of grants is to provide co-funding to research groups for single items of research equipment that do not qualify for equipment funding awards from the University Equipment Committee (UEC) or the Academic Computing Committee.

The Faculty of Health Sciences’ vision is to be a center of excellence in health sciences that are locally relevant and globally competitive.  Established over 100 years ago in 1912, the Faculty is the oldest medical school in sub-Saharan Africa and the top-rated on the continent. With a stellar reputation in education and research, we were ranked 48th in the 2014 Times Higher Education World University Rankings for clinical, preclinical and health, placing the Faculty in the company of internationally acclaimed universities.

Course Level: Grants are available to pursue research.

Study Subject: Grants are available within the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Scholarship Award: Broadly speaking, this category includes any essential research equipment that is classified as ‘infrastructure’ by the UEC or that is below the UEC funding threshold of R100, 000.

  • Only applications for single items of equipment that are expressly driven by the needs of research will be considered.
  • Applications must be ranked and endorsed by the applicant’s Departmental Research Committee (DRC) prior to submission to the Faculty Equipment Committee.
  • Applicants must provide a minimum contribution of at least 10%of the total cost of the equipment.
  • The maximum award from the Faculty Equipment Committee is R100, 000.
  • Funding is competitive and is limited by the total available Faculty Equipment Committee budget of R400, 000.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:


Applicants must hold an academic or joint appointment in the UCT Faculty of Health Sciences and are limited to one application per round.

Criteria for selection:

Awards will be made on a competitive basis.

Applications will be reviewed by the Faculty Equipment Committee and ranked based on the strength of the research need (including benefit to student and postdoc projects), alignment with the Faculty research strategy & DRC ranking.

Preference will be given to applicants who are within 5 years of appointment at UCT.

Nationality: South African applicants are eligible to apply for this grant.

The application form must be accompanied by at least two recent quotes or a motivation for a single quote.
