University of Florida Scholarships 2022

Studying at the University of Florida could be such an exciting experience, especially with its load of scholarships to cover your study cost. The University of Florida has scholarships for transfer students, undergraduates, and even the UF study abroad scholarships. Your UF scholarship search may be over as we present you with a couple of scholarships for UF students in this post

UF awards scholarships based on academic achievement. However, you may get scholarships by also demonstrating financial need.

Furthermore, you don’t have to repay UF scholarships, the same way UF doesn’t expect you to perform services to receive them. These scholarships are simply Gift Aid. These scholarships are abundant because the university, the state, and individual colleges and departments award them, and even private companies and individuals award them.

In this post, we provide you with information on scholarships at UF on all categories. We hope to save you some of the time you take to search for UF scholarships. However, you’ll have to apply for these scholarships through the University of Florida’s Office for Student Financial Affairs (SFA), your department, or other relevant offices. You’ll find links below to the scholarships leading you to apply at the UF scholarship site.

Student Financial Affairs(SFA) Scholarship

One of the ways to access scholarships at the University of Florida is through the office for Financial Affairs (SFA). The SFA administers several kinds of scholarships for UF students including non-endowed and endowed scholarships.

While you may have to apply manually for the SFA scholarships, you are automatically qualified for scholarships if you:

  • Apply for financial aid so that UF receives Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) results by the “on-time” deadline of December 15
  • Have financial need as indicated by the FAFSA
  • Enroll as a full-time student of the university
  • Have a 3.0 GPA, and
  • Meet the donor-specified criteria.

UF’s SFA awards the following scholarships using the criteria above. Thus, the information on the scholarships will be brief. However, we’ll extensively discuss donor scholarships, so you will be clear on what they expect of you.

Machen Florida Opportunity Scholarships

This program is an initiative of the University of Florida that was supported by the Florida legislature in early June 2006. The Machen Florida Opportunity Scholarships (MFOS) ensures that qualified students won’t have to work or borrow to attend UF. Instead, their need will be fully met with grants and scholarships. This scholarship provides $12 million dollars in scholarships and grants yearly to UF students.

However, these awards are available to Florida resident first-time-in-college freshmen students and undergraduate renewal students. These students should be from economically disadvantaged backgrounds with parents who have not earned a bachelor’s degree.

Aside from being a Florida resident studying an undergraduate program as a freshman in the university, you’ll have to apply for FAFSA to be eligible. UF will have to receive your FAFSA application by December 15. Also, you must be enrolled in the university for at least twelve (12) credit hours/semester and maintain satisfactory academic progress.

You also should not have defaulted on or owe a refund to any previous aid program. Additionally, your family’s total income should be less than $40,000 while total family assets (other than the home) are less than $25,000.

How to Apply

UF expects you to apply for this scholarship even before gaining admission into the university. This is because SFA awards financial aid on a first-come-first-served basis. Therefore, for SFA to consider your scholarship application, you must be an admitted student and have met the “On-Time” deadline.

Endowed Scholarships & Fellowships

James Wilmer Crews, III, Tuition Scholarship Fund

Sara Lavinia de Keni Scholarship

During her 46-year career in education, she taught all types of students from preschool children to graduate students.

Floyd Gehan Scholarship

This UF endowment scholarship is in honor of Clara Floyd Gehan who was the first woman to graduate from FU Law School in 1933. However, she received her bachelor’s degree from Brenau College in Gainesville, GA, in 1929. She was very generous to her alma mater during her lifetime, and upon her death in 1992, her estate founded this scholarship to assist students within her community to achieve their academic and career goals.

Paul G. and Harriette C. Franklin Merit Scholarship

Paul G. Franklin and his wife, Harriette, established this scholarship to support UF students. Benacquisto Scholarship

The Benacquisto Scholarship Program is a merit scholarship for high school graduates who receive recognition as a National Merit Scholar. If you are eligible for this scholarship, you will receive an award equal to the standard institutional cost of attendance for an in-state student minus the sum of Bright Futures and the National Merit award.

The scholarship is open to Florida residents as well as non-Florida students.

To be eligible either way, you must be a U.S citizen or an eligible noncitizen. You must also earn a high school diploma or its equivalent. Additionally, you must be a National Merit scholar and enroll full-time in a baccalaureate degree program at a qualifying Florida postsecondary institution. Also, you must initially enroll at the preferred college during the fall academic term following high school graduation.

However, non-Florida students will have to physically reside in Florida on or near the institution’s campus where enrolled.

Senate Bill 4 of March 2018 further expands this scholarship to also cover out-of-state students. Thus, for out-of-state National Merit Scholars, the award is equal to the institutional cost of attendance for a resident of Florida minus the student’s National Merit Scholarship.

Also, the scholarship exempts the students from the payment of out-of-state fees.

Meanwhile, the National Merit Finalist becomes a Scholar by receiving the $2500 National Merit Scholarship, the Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship, and the College-sponsored Merit Scholarship.

Academic Scholarships

The Academic scholarship is another avenue via which students can get a University of Florida scholarship. This avenue does not require you to pass through the SFA to get a UF scholarship. These scholarships are available through departments and offices, and individual colleges and schools within the university. For instance, the UF Admissions Office awards academic scholarships to qualified incoming freshmen, and the Office of Overseas Studies administers financial assistance to enrolled students matriculating abroad.

See also University of Florida: Admission, Tuition, Scholarships, Courses, and Ranking.

You should note, however, that applying through the SFA does not ruin your chances of getting an academic scholarship. The SFA also considers your academic achievement scholarship awards (including tuition fee waivers and reductions). They count them as part of your official aid package.

Office of Admissions Scholarships

The UF Office of Admissions awards academic scholarships to selected incoming freshman students after releasing admissions decisions. You must submit your online application by November 1 for the Office of Admission to consider you for a scholarship here. Also, you must complete their application including test scores, transcripts, and application fee by mid-December.

There is no separate application for the Office of Admissions scholarships. The Office administers scholarships based on residency.

Presidential-tiered scholarships are one of the kinds of scholarships you get here. In-state and ‘in-state eligible students receive this award. Meanwhile, the in-state eligible student is one who may attend high school out of state with Florida pre-paid, military home of record in Florida, or a parent living in Florida with residency. However, students who are classified as non-Florida residents for tuition purposes receive out-of-state scholarships.

The scholarship committee selects recipients in the spring after releasing admissions decisions. To qualify for the scholarships you’ll need high grades and test scores (either SAT or ACT with writing). However, these are not the only criteria. The committee also looks at other factors such as extracurricular involvement, leadership, and community service.

Furthermore, if the Office of Admission scholarship selects you, you’ll get a notification mail around the middle of March every year.
