He made his Broadway debut in Elia Kazan’s Tea and Sympathy, playing Tom Lee, a “sissy” who the right woman cures.

Despite receiving high accolades for Friendly Persuasion, Perkins became a forceful performer in Fear Strikes Out the next year, earning him “the next James Dean” and “the best American actor under thirty.”
