After moving to Washington, D.C., she served as a staff assistant to Rep. Scott McInnis. This led to her working as a press secretary for Rep. Dan Schaefer, a role she served in for nearly four years.

She moved to England with her husband Peter McMahon, in 1998 and returned to Washington in November 2001, two months after the September 11 attacks.

From there, she became the spokeswoman for the Justice Department in 2001. Perino then worked as the assistant director of communications for the White House Environmental Quality Council.

She eventually rose to deputy press secretary under George W. Bush. While Tony Snow underwent cancer treatment in 2007, Perino served as acting White House press secretary.
