Gooding was a lecturer and eventually a reader in Classics at Queen’s University in Belfast from 1959 to 1979. In 1979, he was named professor of Old Testament Greek, and in 1983, he was named professor of Greek. In 1986, he retired as a professor emeritus. In 1977, he was elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy.
