Early life
Ronnie James Dio was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and moved to New York as a child, where he began playing the French horn and trumpet in elementary school. By the time he reached high school, he had already recorded singles with several bands.
In high school, he was a member of The Vegas Kings, a bass guitar band. After he took over as lead singer, the band was renamed Ronnie & the Redcaps.
After a few singles, the band members changed, and the band was renamed Ronnie and the Prophets. The band remained together until 1967, releasing one album and several singles.
Ronnie and former bandmate Nick Pantas went on to form the moderately successful duo Elf. He performed with Rainbow before finding lasting success as the frontman for Black Sabbath and later with his band, Dio.
Career
Dio’s musical career began in 1957 when a group of Cortland, New York musicians called themselves The Vegas Kings. Dio played bass guitar, Billy DeWolfe sang lead vocals, Nick Pantas played guitar, Tom Rogers played drums, and Jack Musci played saxophone.
The band’s name was changed to Ronnie and the Rumblers. The band renamed itself Ronnie and the Redcaps in 1958. In 1960, Musci left the band, and a new guitarist, Dick Botoff, joined the lineup.
The Redcaps released two singles: “Conquest”/”Lover,” with the A-side recalling The Ventures and the B-side featuring DeWolfe on lead vocals. “An Angel Is Missing”/”What’d I Say,” the second single, featured Dio on lead vocals.
Ronnie Dio and the Prophets reformed as The Electric Elves in late 1967, with the addition of a keyboard player. The band was involved in a fatal car accident in February 1968, which killed guitarist Nick Pantas and briefly hospitalized Dio and the other band members.
Following the accident, the band’s name was shortened to The Elves, used until mid-1972 when it released its first proper album under the name Elf. The group became a regular opening act for Deep Purple over the next few years.
Elf released three albums before disbanding because of the member’s involvement in recording the first Rainbow album in early 1975.
