Lola Falana, also known as Loletha Elayne Falana, was born on September 11, 1942, in Camden, New Jersey, to Bennett and Cleo Falana (who died in 2010).

Her father was an Afro-Cuban who fled Cuba to join the US Marine Corps and later worked as a welder, while her mother worked as a seamstress. Falana is of American descent and belongs to the Afro-American ethnic group.

Falana was third among the six children, and from the age of five, she used to sing and dance in the church choir. After the birth of her two younger siblings, her family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Lola Falana only attended high school. She was already dancing in nightclubs by the time she was in junior high school, escorted by her mother.

Her desire to pursue a musical career became so strong that she left out of Germantown High School a few months before graduation and relocated to New York City to pursue it, much against her parents’ wishes.

Lola Falana Personal Life

In 1970, Falana married Feliciano “Butch” Tavares Jr., one of the five brothers in the famed R&B/soul vocal group Tavares, and they divorced in 1975.

Prior to her marriage to Feliciano, she had an affair with her then-mentor Sammy Davis Jr. from 1965 to 1968, which became public after Davis confessed it to his then-wife May Britt, resulting in their divorce in 1968.

There is no information that she is the mother of any children.

Her Illness

She had a serious relapse of multiple sclerosis in 1987. Her left side became paralyzed, she become half-blind, and her voice and hearing were affected.

Her rehabilitation took a year and a half, and she spent most of that time praying. She credits her recovery to a spiritual experience she described as “being able to feel the Lord’s presence.”

She became a Roman Catholic in 1988 and incorporated her newfound faith into her daily life.

Despite the fact that she resumed performing in Las Vegas shows in 1987, her religious and spiritual practices remained the focal point of her life. Falana returned to Philadelphia in 1996 after another attack with multiple sclerosis and briefly resided with her parents.

At the age of sixteen, she had her first dancing gig at a Dinah Washington nightclub visit in Philadelphia, where Washington offered her the opening act slot.

Sammy Davis Jr. noticed her while she was dancing in a chorus line in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and cast her in his 1964 Broadway musical Golden Boy.

After the musical, she began her music career in 1964, recording and releasing her first single, “My Baby,” for Mercury Records in 1965.

Falana recorded for Frank Sinatra’s record label later in her career. She was mentored by Davis in the late 1960s.

Davis cast her in her debut film role, A Man Called Adam, in 1966, alongside himself, Ossie Davis, and Cicely Tyson. Beginning in 1967, she rose to prominence in Italian cinema.

She was known as the “Black Venus” in Italy, where she learned to speak fluent Italian while starring in three films.

Furthermore, she was busy traveling as a singer and dancer with Davis, making films in Italy, and resuming her role in Golden Boy during its revival in London during this time.

In 1969, her strong working relationship with Sammy Davis Jr. ended, although the two remained friends. In 1970, she made her American film debut in The Liberation of L.B. Jones, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best New Star Of The Year – Actress.

She also posed for Playboy magazine in the same year. She was the first black woman to appear in advertisements for Faberge’s “Tigress” perfume.

Also, she appeared in a couple of films that are classified as blaxploitation. In 1978, she performed at the Val Air Ballroom, which was sponsored by Black Pride, Inc.

Early in the 1970s. She was a regular on the Joey Bishop Show and The Hollywood Palace, where she was showcasing her musical, dancing, and light comedic skills.

Bill Cosby engaged her as the first supporting actress for his much-anticipated variety show, The New Bill Cosby Show, which premiered on CBS on September 11, 1972 (her 30th birthday).

Falana’s disco single There’s A Man Out There Somewhere peaked at #67 on Billboard’s R&B chart in 1975. In the same year, she made her Broadway comeback as the lead in Doctor Jazz.

Despite the fact that the show only ran for five performances, she was nominated for a Tony Award and won the Theater World Award in 1975.

She carried her performance to Las Vegas with the support of Sammy Davis, Jr., and it quickly became a hit. By the late 1970s, she had earned the title of “Queen of Las Vegas.”

At The Sands, The Riviera, and the MGM Grand hotels, she played to sold-out crowds. Later, she was offered $100,000 per week to perform in The Aladdin.

She was the highest-paid female performer in Las Vegas at the time. Her performance aired for twenty weeks a year and was a popular tourist draw.

While still performing to sold-out crowds, she joined the cast of a short-lived CBS soap opera, Capitol, as Charity Blake, a wealthy entertainment magnate.

In 1983, she was performing at Bally’s hotel and casino in Atlantic City when she won minority ownership in the New York Mets while playing baccarat. She kept the stake until 1988 when she sold it to Frank Cashen for $14 million.

In 1995, she collaborated with Catholic singer Joseph Lee Hooker on the song “Don’t Cry, Mary.” In 1997, she gave her last known musical performance at Wayne Newton’s theater in Branson, Missouri.
