Broderick Steven Harvey was born in Welch, West Virginia, on January 17, 1957, to coal miner Jesse Harvey and his wife Eloise Vera. Broderick is his first name, and he was named after actor Broderick Crawford from the TV show Highway Patrol.
Harvey had a serious stuttering problem as a child, which he finally overcame, and his family then relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, where they lived on East 112th Street, which was later renamed Steve Harvey Way in 2015.
He graduated from Glenville High School in 1974 and went on to Kent State University and West Virginia University after that, where he was a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity.

Harvey began his career doing stand-up comedy in the mid-1980s but before venturing into comedy, he took many jobs like a boxer, autoworker, insurance salesman, and even carpet cleaner, he also made his debut as a comedian at the Hilarities Comedy Club in Cleveland, Ohio in 1985.
During the initial years of his career, Harvey faced severe hardships to the extent that he was homeless for three years in the late 1980s when he used to sleep in his car day by day but In 1990, Harvey got the opportunity to work as the host of the TV show “It’s Showtime at the Apollo” and simultaneously continued to do stand-up comedy and went on the 1997 Kings of Comedy tour which was one of the highest-earning comedy tours grossing $37 million in 1997 and 1998.
His success in comedy eventually led to an eight-year stint as host of Its Showtime at the Apollo, as well as to various entertainment roles including acting, hosting, writing, and producing programs among which is the TV show, ABC’s Me and the Boys, The WB’s The Steve Harvey Show and Steve Harvey’s Big Time Challenge, Love Don’t Cost a Thing, You Got Served, Johnson Family Vacation and Madea Goes to Jail.
In the year 2010 Harvey began hosting Family Feud and under him, the show achieved high ratings and became the first nationally syndicated TV series ever to increase its ratings for seven consecutive years making Harvey to surpassed the original host Richard Dawson‘s tenure as the longest-serving host in Family Feud history.
