Downe created a band called The Bondage Boys in high school, and he published a song with them called “The Loser” on Northwest Metalfest, a compilation comprising 10 Seattle-area bands, under the stage name Vaun Hammer. He moved from Seattle to San Diego and then to Los Angeles. 

Downe was a light stage operator at the Troubadour and worked at Retail Slut in Hollywood. Magnus Walker of Serious Clothing got his start accidentally when Downe questioned where he bought his pants when heading into Retail Slut. Even though Walker had purchased them for less than $10 in Hollywood, Downe instructed him to find eight pairs for $25 to sell at the store.

He started the band Faster Pussycat in 1985. In 1987, the five-piece band published their debut album. Faster Pussycat was contracted to Elektra Records and released Wake Me When It’s Over in 1989, which sold over 500,000 copies. They shared the stage with acts such as Y&T, Alice Cooper, Mötley Crüe, KISS, David Lee Roth, and others.  

Whipped!, their next album, was less well-received when released in 1992. Downes moved to Chicago to work with Pigface that year, and the band disbanded. Skid Row’s 1992 cover of the Ramones’ “Psycho Therapy” featured Downe on backing vocals.  

Shortly after, Downe went to Los Angeles and formed the industrial rock band The Newlydeads, for which he wrote and produced. He created his club, The Pretty Ugly Club, with co-owner JD Terziu in 1998, and it was a smash hit, achieving the same level of popularity as The Cathouse. 

Time has also promoted other clubs in Los Angeles, including Thunder Pussy and Pretty Pussy. He was also the DJ at Metal Skool, hosted by Josh Richman.  

The Newlyweds released Re-Bound, a remix CD, in 2000, and Dead End in 2001. Downe reconnected with original Faster Pussycat members Brent Muscat and Greg Steele for a tour the following year. In 2002, the reformed band opened for Poison.  

In May 2006, he published Dreams from a Dirt Nap, a Newlydeads best-of album, and in July, he released The Power and the Glory Hole, a Faster Pussycat album.
