Broderick Steven Harvey was born in Welch, West Virginia, on January 17, 1957, to coal miner Jesse Harvey and his wife Eloise Vera. Broderick is his first name, and he was named after actor Broderick Crawford from the TV show Highway Patrol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harvey had a serious stuttering problem as a child, which he finally overcame, and his family then relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, where they lived on East 112th Street, which was later renamed Steve Harvey Way in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He graduated from Glenville High School in 1974 and went on to Kent State University and West Virginia University after that, where he was a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harvey began his career doing stand-up comedy in the mid-1980s but before venturing into comedy, he took many jobs like a boxer, autoworker, insurance salesman, and even carpet cleaner, he also made his debut as a comedian at the Hilarities Comedy Club in Cleveland, Ohio in 1985.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
