International Intermediate Fellowship is inviting application for the prestigious fellowships for mid-career researchers from low- and middle-income countries. International Intermediate Fellowship also offers fellowships for Training, Masters and Senior Researchers.

About the Award:
This scheme helps mid-career researchers from low- and middle-income countries establish independent research programmes in those countries.
The scheme aims to support research that will improve Basic, Clinical and Public Health at a local, national and global level.

Eligibility:
Students can apply for an Intermediate Fellowship in Basic, Clinical and Public Health if they:
- Are a national of a low- or middle-income country
- Have a PhD or a degree in medicine and are qualified to enter higher specialist training
- Have three to six years postdoctoral experience.
- Do not have a PhD or degree in medicine – International Intermediate Fellowship may still be considered if they have a first or Master’s degree and can show substantial research experience.
Students must also:
- Have a strong track record in your area of research and show the potential to become a scientific leader
- Have sponsorship from an eligible host organisation in a low or middle-income country
- Have a research proposal that is within the Basic, Clinical and Public Health remit.

- The suitability of your research environment.
This scheme may be of particular interest if you’re an early career fellow (such as a Training Fellow in Basic, Clinical and Public Health) and this fellowship is the next step in your career as a research scientist.
Your research proposal
Your research proposal should be within our science remit and focus on a health priority in a low- or middle-income country.
When we consider your application, we’ll look at:
- your research contributions
- the scientific merit of your proposed project
- the significance of the research
- the feasibility of your proposal
- the suitability of your sponsor and host environment for both your research and for the development of your independent career.
By the end of this fellowship you should:
- Have achieved international standing in your area of research
- Be leading your own research programme
- Have the skills and experience to apply for senior level fellowships or permanent positions at a research organisation.

Value of Fellowship:
Support includes:
- A basic salary (determined by your host organisation)
- Personal removal expenses
- Research expenses, directly related to your proposal
Scholarship can be taken in low- and middle-income countries except India.
Duration of Fellowship:
An Intermediate Fellowship in Basic, Clinical and Public Health is for up to five years and cannot be renewed.
An Intermediate Fellowship can be held on a part-time basis.

Review of preliminary applications
We’ll assess your eligibility and give advice about your competitiveness and the resources you’ve requested. We’ll give you a decision within four weeks of the preliminary application deadline. If suitable, we’ll invite you to submit a full application.

Submit your full application to your host organisation for approval
Complete the full application form on Grant Tracker. Submit it to the ‘authorised organisational approver’ at your host organisation for approval. Make sure you leave enough time for the approver to review and submit your application before the deadline. The approver may ask you to make changes to your application.

External peer review
We’ll seek written comments from external expert reviewers.

Scientific review and shortlisting
The International Interview Committee will shortlist applications. If shortlisted, we’ll notify you at least four weeks before an interview and send you unattributed comments from the external peer review.

Interview
If you’re invited for interview, you’ll be asked to make a short presentation. This will be followed by questions from the International Interview Committee. Interviews take place at the Wellcome offices in London. We’ll provide travel and accommodation costs.
