What do 1st 2nd 3rd mean on LinkedIn?

3rd-degree connections
The 3+ icon represents third-degree connections. These are the persons who have 2nd-degree ties to you. You can send them an invitation by clicking Connect if their full first and last names are shown.
The great majority of LinkedIn users will be in your third tier or higher. So a 4th is connected to your 3rd, a 5th to your 4th, and so on.
You can send them a message if you’re in the same LinkedIn Group as them and they’ve enabled Group members access to their email address. If they have an email address posted on their profile, you can find it and write them an email.
On LinkedIn, you won’t be able to message each other. You won’t be able to view what each other has shared. You will no longer be connected if you are connected. You won’t be able to see each other in the Who’s Viewed Your Profile section.

LinkedIn Connections allow you to stay in touch with people in your professional network. Your contacts are listed below that bar, by default sorted by Most Recent Conversation. This way, you can view the LinkedIn contacts with whom you’ve most recently communicated, as well as the time since your last conversation, which LinkedIn displays next to each name.

You can message 2nd-degree connections without being linked if you have LinkedIn InMail. To compose and send your message, simply open their profiles and click the “InMail” button.
