ASA Minority Fellowship Program

With the objective and aim of supporting the training of sociologists in any sub-specialty area, the (ASA) American Sociological Association offers this scholarship award to minority doctoral students who are enrolled in an accredited program of Ph.D. in Sociology degree.

Eligible candidates must be United States citizens or at least legal residents. They must have completed one full academic year of graduate studies, exhibit academic excellence, and be aiming for a career in sociological research.

Recipients are granted an $18,000 stipend for 12 months to cover the costs of their doctoral training and research projects studying important societal issues.

Dr. Alma S. Adams Scholarships

This Scholarship is awarded each year for $5,000 to two (2) students pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies in social work, sociology, education, public health, communications, or any related field to raise awareness of tobacco’s harmful impact each year through The American Legacy For Health Foundation.

Qualified candidates must be U.S. citizens or at least permanent legal residents, must attend an accredited American institution, and exhibit financial need.

The candidate must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, display evidence of community service activities in an underserved community setting, and create a public message conveying some cultural health messages geared towards tobacco prevention.

2023 Applications are now being accepted for the Dr. Alma S. Adams Scholarship for outreach and health communications to help reduce tobacco use among priority populations.

All the students pursuing a course of study in public health, communications, social work, education, liberal arts are welcomed to apply.

The major purpose of the scholarship is to inspire and train future leaders. $5,000 amount will be awarded to the winning candidates.

Eligibility

It is important to meet the eligibility criteria before applying:

Only the students pursuing a course of study in public health, communications, social work, education, liberal arts will be considered eligible.

The applicant must have a Grade Point Average of at least 2.0 (C average) in the most recent academic year.

Stanford Lyman Memorial Scholarship

This program is administered by the Mid-South Sociological Association (MSSA). This Scholarship award is being presented annually for $1,000 to a deserving Ph.D. candidate who is currently working on dissertation research related to sociological theory, race relations, symbolic interaction, law, or ethics.

Eligible applicants must at least be attending an accredited graduate school within the MSSA member states of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, or Virginia.

A candidate’s applications must include a brief letter of introduction, dissertation project proposal, letter of recommendation from a dissertation committee, and current curriculum vitae.

Eligibility requirements

Ph.D. candidate working on a dissertation in sociological theory, race relations, symbolic interaction, law, or ethics.

The applicant must be receiving the degree from an institution within the MSSA member states or from an institution that has active MSSA student/faculty memberships.

Boren Awards for International Study

Through the National Security Education Program, the Boren Awards for International Study is granted annually to provide up to $20,000 to undergraduate students in the U. S who wishes to study abroad in Africa, Asia, Central or Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East to better understand global problems.

This is yet another wonderful platform and opportunity which Sociology students can maximize to study societal challenges, such as hunger, population growth, migration, sustainable development, global disease, economic competitiveness, environmental degradation, and on.

All applicants must be United States citizens, and have graduated from high school, and must be matriculated in an accredited four-year institution in undergraduate studies.

Eligibility: You are eligible to apply for the Boren Scholarships if you are:

A high school graduate, or at least have earned a GED.

Matriculated at least in an undergraduate degree program located within the United States and accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

The Boren Scholars must ensure that they remain matriculated in their undergraduate programs. At least for the duration of the scholarship and may not graduate until the scholarship is complete.

Applying for a study abroad program that meets home institution standards in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. The Boren Scholarships are not for study in the United States.

NFRW National Pathfinder Scholarships

Initially founded in the year 1985 in honor of the First Lady Nancy Regan’s efforts to prevent drug and alcohol abuse.

The National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) offers this National Pathfinder Scholarships annually for $2,500 apiece to female students seeking to obtain a degree in sociology, social work, psychology, pharmacology, counseling, or a related field.

For a woman to be eligible, she must have attained at least sophomore-level standing, attend an accredited United States college and must be enrolled full-time in a bachelor’s or master’s program, and wishes to build a career focused managing addictions.

A candidate’s application must be accompanied by three (3) letters of recommendation, official college transcripts, a professional photograph, and a one-page typed personal essay.

The three annual scholarships of $2,500 help to provide financial assistance and support to women seeking undergraduate or graduate degrees.

Undergraduate sophomores, juniors, and seniors, as well as students enrolled in a master’s degree program, are all eligible to apply for the scholarship.

However, recent high school graduates and undergraduate freshmen are not eligible. Applicants can only apply for one (1) scholarship per year. Scholarship winners can not reapply.

Rieger Thesis/Dissertation Scholarship

First established in the year 2012, the Rieger Thesis/Dissertation Scholarship was designed to provide $1,000 annually in honor of an accomplished sociologist, Jon Rieger, who was one of the founders of the International Visual Sociology Association (IVSA) in the year 1980 and studied the image of rural residents across the U.S. Midwest.

This scholarship is primarily focused on encouraging outstanding graduate students over their master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation research in the visual sociology discipline.

Together with the scholarship funding, the recipients are given a certificate of merit from IVSA and also, the opportunity to publish their work on the website.

This program is in honor of a civil rights advocate who challenged the imprisonment of Japanese Americans during WWII.

This  Scholarship is awarded each year for $2,000 by the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) for college students who intend to study sociology, law, or education.

Eligible candidates must be active members of the JACL, and also must be of Japanese descent.

The candidate must attend an accredited U.S. institution full-time, and showcase a strong interest in human rights.

Candidates must submit proof of JACL membership, one (1) letter of recommendation, official college transcripts, a brief personal statement, and two copies of the completed application.

Alpha Kappa Delta Undergraduate Student Paper Award (AKDUSPA)

With value ranging from $100 to $1,000, the Alpha Kappa Delta Honor Society hosts an annual Undergraduate Student Paper Competition to provide multiple awards to current student members who are enrolled in an approved bachelor’s degree program for sociology in the U. S.

Qualified participants must submit at least, a maximum 35-page single-authored scholarly essay exploring any aspect of a sociological topic.

Along with the scholarship, recipients equally receive travel expenses to attend the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association (ASA) and the chance to publish their work in the “Sociological Inquiry.”

Each year, the Alpha Kappa Delta hosts and sponsors an undergraduate student paper competition.

Recipients can win cash prizes and travel money to attend the American Sociological Association annual conference.

The first-place winners are able to have their papers published in Sociological Inquiry should they decide to submit them.

AWARDS

The First Place Winner gets $500 and up to $1,000 in travel expenses to the 2023 annual meeting of the American Sociological Association.

Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship

Since the year 1987, the Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship has been a highly competitive national program that provides recent college graduates the opportunity to spend six (6) to nine (9)  months in Washington, DC as junior staff members before continuing to graduate school.

Eligible candidates must have completed a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, and must a be U.S. citizens or at least foreign nationals and must be considering a career working on international peace issues, and must also display experience with public-interest activism or advocacy.

The scholarship recipients will receive $2,700 per month with a $1,000 scholarship in exchange for working full time at one of the 27 participating governmental organizations.

Description:

The UNCF Corporate Scholars program provides selected candidates with a paid internship at a SUEZ for-profit facility. The UNCF  provides a $5,000 scholarship for the academic year, paid for by the SUEZ Foundation.

The internships will be offered at various locations which include but not limited to: Paramus, New Jersey; West Nyack, New York; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Wilmington, TX, Delaware; Richmond, VA; Nassau, NY; West Basin, CA and Pasadena.

All Native American/Alaska Native undergraduate students attending tribal colleges and universities are both eligible to apply for the American Indian College Fund Full Circle Scholarship Program and the American Indian College Fund TCU Scholarship Program.

The general eligibility requirements for both scholarships include the following:

• Must be enrolled in an accredited tribal college or university.

Description:

Normally, an Internship would typically last 5-6 months, but UAS7 research internships run from 2-6 months, which may even be dependent on the specifications of the project description.

Recipients of this award would receive a full tuition waiver for both semesters (however, enrollment is also required during the internship to maintain residency in Germany) and some significant benefits provided to exchange students at the host UAS. Successful SIP applicants are also eligible for a UAS7 Travel Scholarship.

A  candidate or an applicant must be a full-time sophomore or at least a junior in good academic standing and currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited United States or Canadian college/university and in a field represented on UAS7 campuses.

ALBA George Watt Memorial Essay Contest

This annual essay competition was established in 1998 to honor Lincoln vet George Watt, a writer and lifelong activist central to the creation of ALBA.

Students from virtually all parts of the world are invited to write and submit an essay chapter about any aspect of the Spanish Civil War they choose to, the global political or cultural struggles against fascism in the years the 1920s and 1930s.

Or the lifetime histories and contributions of the international volunteers who fought to support the Spanish Republic from 1936 to 1938.

The essay work or thesis will be judged based on originality, quality of research, and the effectiveness of the argument or presentation.

The prize is awarded in three (3) categories

1. Pre-collegiate

The Beinecke Scholarship Program is known all over the world for awarding each scholar $4,000 before their entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending a graduate school. There are no preferences or geographic restrictions on the use of the scholarship.

An applicant must be a college junior pursuing a bachelor’s degree and plan to enter a master’s or doctoral program in the arts, humanities or social sciences.

However, Students in the social sciences who plan to pursue graduate study in neuroscience cannot apply.

Islamic Scholarship Fund

With the primary aim and mission of increasing Muslim American representation in professions that influence public policy or opinion, the Islamic Scholarship Fund was created to award $2,000 to $5,000 to people who practice the Muslim faith and who are also currently earning a degree in film, media studies, sociology, communication, public policy, journalism, writing, law, criminal justice, international relations, non-profit management, religious studies, or anthropology.

For an applicant to be qualified, he or she must be active members of the Muslim community and attend an accredited United States institution. The candidate must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and must have United States citizenship or permanent residency and have attained at least sophomore status, and submit two (2) letters of recommendation.

The ISF offers many joint scholarships to Muslim Student/University Alumni groups with a common mission and vision. The ISF is honored to work with the MSA-West to host the ISF-MSA West Scholarship.

Eligibility:

The candidate must major in an ISF-supported field of study and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Annually, the J.W. Saxe Memorial Fund bestows one or more scholarships for up to $2,000 apiece to undergraduate or graduate students in accredited United States universities who are seeking support for an unpaid or low paying internship related to public service.
