Introduction

The question for a long time has been if education should be free. At the mention of the topic, every room is split into three or more. There are those who believe that education should be free and that all should benefit, whether young or old.

There are also those who feel that it should not be, under any circumstances while there are those who feel that it doesn’t matter.

Amongst those who feel it should be free are those who also believe that nothing is free and someone has to bear the cost. The question now is who bears the cost of free education.

Realizing the impact of poor and nonexistent education is why steps have at least been taken to make it general that primary education is free.

According to international human rights law, primary education shall be compulsory and free of charge. Secondary and higher education shall be made progressively free of charge.

While this may not be achievable everywhere, there are still moves to make education free for adults who still want to get educated.

Adult Education Statistics

According to research, In the U.S., over 130 million adults have low literacy, including 20% of adults with a high school diploma.

The U.S. ranked 21st in numeracy and 16th in literacy out of 24 countries in a 2013 assessment
of adults’ skills.

The study is evidence that points to the fact that free adult education needs to significantly improve.

There is work to be done and some have made their options available for many to participate.

Among those with available options for free adult education are those listed in the segments below.

Online Free Education websites for adults

In the subjects of Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, computer science, Economics, Engineering, English, Entrepreneurship, History, Law, Mathematics, Medicine, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Religion, and Statistics.

The idea behind Academic Earth came to Ludlow upon stumbling on a full video course lecture from MIT Mathematics Professor Gilbert Strang.

Doing further research, he found out that there are various academic resources online although these resources were scattered across different websites and in varying file formats.

Patterned after Hulu, Academic Earth serves as an easily accessible repository for online academic lectures.

iTunesU does include courses on a pretty wide scope of topics but does not integrate with Android, Google or Windows mobile devices.

Stanford Online

Your hub for all the online offerings from Stanford University, Stanford Online offers self-paced and session-based courses.

While Coursera features some courses from Stanford, many classes are only available via other hosts.

Some courses require iTunes, but most are completed in your web browser.

Harvard Extension

Like Stanford Online, Harvard Extension features free online education courses from Harvard only.

This is another excellent source for top-notch course material, though the course variety is less rich than multi-school sites.

Additionally, Harvard Extension allows you to search for courses by professional certificate. This makes it much easier if your online education goal includes certification.

Conclusion
