- The competition is open to students who are currently studying in the UK;
- Applications could come from individuals or from teams;
- Your submission can tie in with a topic you’re currently studying and want to take to the next level, or you may have a totally original idea you want to develop. Either way, you could have a chat with your tutors before you enter, and ask for their advice.
STEM 2022 Challenges
- Design: Natural disasters have devastating and far-reaching impacts on communities in developing and developed countries. How can the construction industry respond to extreme climatic events in new and innovative ways to mitigate the effect, capitalising on advanced technology and digitalisation?
- Defence Technology: Allied air forces of the 2040s are required to perform regular reconnaissance flights over highly hostile enemy territory without detection, whilst also performing humanitarian air drops. Your challenge is to design an aircraft which meets these requirements. Consider the merits of manned and unmanned aircraft, as well as new types of human/machine interface and manufacturing techniques including 3D printing.
- Digital: From design through to manufacture and into service we capture vast amounts of data. Data can teach us how to improve, but sometimes these lessons get lost in the complex data we deal with. How can we use augmented/virtual reality to better understand the important messages hidden in data?
- Innovation: The UK health and social care sectors are under increasing pressure. How can technology such as artificial intelligence, robotics and automation, tackle the crisis in health and social care or offer solutions to promote wellbeing?
- Healthcare: Childhood pneumonia is the biggest preventable cause of death among the under-fives in developing countries. GSK is investing significantly into research and development in this area and your challenge is to explore new ideas to help prevent or treat childhood pneumonia in areas where hospital care is limited.
- Automobile: By 2030, it’s expected that roads will have become busier. Cars will likely be smarter and more connected – to their owners as well as to other road users. McLaren owners, however, will always love the thrill of driving. How can we use technology in our future luxury sports cars and supercars to continue engaging our customers in the entertainment of driving?
Prizes
- The winning entry gets a £25,000 cash prize, presented by Babcock International Group and a bespoke mentoring programme;
- Each category winners receives a work placement or work experience with the sponsor of the category they entered;
- All category winners get exposure with senior managers from their category sponsors and the chance for exclusive company visits and possibly more.
