Daiwa Scholarship for UK Citizens 2022

If you are a UK citizen and you want to study in Japan, a Daiwa Scholarship could be the route for you. This UK Citizens Scholarship covers your tuition fees.

The Daiwa Scholarship is open to UK graduates in any subject except for Japanese Studies. It is a unique, 19-month program of language study, work placement, and homestay in Japan, following a month of Japanese language tuition in the UK.

The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation is also a United Kingdom-based charity established in 1988 to support closer links between Britain and Japan.

The Foundation also carries out its objective through the following activities:

  • making grants available to individuals, institutions, and organizations to promote links between the UK and Japan in all fields of activity
  • awarding scholarships to young British graduates to study Japan and its language
  • organizing a year-round program of events to increase understanding of Japan in the UK

What You Need To Know About Daiwa Scholarship

Daiwa Scholarship is a unique 19-month program of language study, work placement, and homestay in Japan, following a month of Japanese language tuition in the UK.

This Scholarship, offers young and talented UK citizens with strong leadership potential, the opportunity to acquire Japanese language skills, and to access expertise and knowledge relevant to their career goals.

Daiwa Scholar program is also provided by the Foundation to encourage better understanding between both countries. However, no previous experience in Japan or Japanese is necessary.

LEVEL / FIELD OF STUDY

The Daiwa Scholarship is open to UK students who are equipped with a strong degree in any subject or with a strong record of achievement in their field.

HOST NATIONALITY:

The selected Daiwa Scholars will undertake a period of Japanese language study in the UK during summer before moving to Japan in mid-September for the remainder of the Scholarship.

This Daiwa Scholar program is available to all British citizens.

Daiwa Scholarship national guard BENEFITS

  • It is a fully funded scholarship.
  • The Foundation meets all tuition and examination fees associated with the Scholarship.
  • Daiwa Scholars receive a maintenance grant for the duration of the Scholarship which is to cover accommodation and living costs for a single person. While on the program, Scholars may not undertake remunerated work.
  • The Foundation meets the cost of economy-class travel to and from Japan at the beginning and end of the Scholarship.
  • For their first weeks in Japan, Daiwa Scholars are accommodated in a hotel in central Tokyo. During this period, they will look for rented apartments in which they will live for the remainder of the Scholarship.
  • All Daiwa Scholars contribute to the compulsory Japanese Government Health Scheme from their maintenance. In addition, the Foundation provides standard medical insurance for Daiwa Scholars while they are in Japan on the program.

Daiwa Scholar program national guard ELIGIBILITY

Candidates for the Daiwa Scholar program must be:

  • British Citizens
  • aged between 21 and 35 years of age by the time of departure.

Candidates should be:

  • graduates or due to graduate by the time of departure
  • equipped with a strong degree in any subject* or with a strong record of achievement in their field.
  • in possession of clear career objectives and a commitment to furthering UK-Japan links.

NOTE: Graduates in Japanese language studies are not eligible to apply for Daiwa Scholarships but may wish to apply for support through the Daiwa Scholarships in Japanese Studies or the Foundation’s grant schemes.
Preference will normally be given to candidates no older than 30.

Daiwa Scholarship Deadline

The deadline for the scholarship 2022 program is Thursday 3 December 2022.

The first round of interviews will be held in February 2022, the second round of interviews in February 2022, and the final interviews in March 2022.

FAQs

Studying Japanese is at the heart of the program. To gain the full benefit of the work placement and the homestay it is essential that Scholars attain a good standard in their language studies.

The Foundation’s Tokyo Office helps Scholars find accommodation, arrange a homestay, and organize the work placements and is the first point of contact for everyday issues. Daiwa Foundation Japan House in London provides overall co-ordination of the program and also keeps in regular contact with Scholars.

Under the terms and conditions of the Daiwa Scholarship, only full British citizens in possession of a British passport are eligible.

The Foundation has extensive contacts across Japan and has successfully arranged a wide range of work placements for Daiwa Scholars. Past Scholars have undertaken work placements at government offices, universities, industrial research centers, law firms, artist workshops, theatres, architecture practices, film schools, and a variety of other organizations.

Scholars cannot undertake paid work as they are in Japan on a student visa and then a cultural activities visa. The Foundation provides Daiwa Scholars with a maintenance grant for the duration of the Scholarship which is to cover accommodation and living costs for a single person and to enable them to concentrate on language study and fulfill their work placement.

Japanese is a challenging language so candidates must be able to demonstrate a strong ability in foreign languages. Daiwa Scholars study at the Center for the Japanese Language at Waseda University.  The centre provides an intensive learning environment.

Daiwa Scholars receive a maintenance grant for the duration of the Scholarship which is to cover accommodation and living costs for a single person. While on the programme, Scholars may not undertake remunerated work.

No. The offer to become a Daiwa Scholar must be taken up in the year in which it is given.

All interviews for the Daiwa Scholarships are held at Daiwa Foundation Japan House in London.
While the Foundation is unable to reimburse travel expenses for candidates to attend the first two interview stages, it will reimburse reasonable travel expenses to attend the final interview. The Foundation regrets that it is unable to reimburse any accommodation costs, should these be incurred.
