GRIPS Japanese Government Scholarship In Japan 2022-2023

The desire to further one’s education is sometimes cut short by a lack of finance. To that end, GRIPS Japanese government Scholarship presents a worthwhile opportunity for graduate students from developing countries to study, explore and experience quality education in Japan.

About GRIPS Scholarship in Japan

Students from developing countries as well as other eligible countries who wish to undertake Masters or Ph.D. programs at The National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) for AY 2020-2021 may apply to 1 of several scholarships or fellowships allotted to GRIPS by various sponsoring organizations.

The scholarship and fellowship programs available through direct application to GRIPS are; The Japanese Government Scholarship (MEXT), Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP), Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP), Japan–WCO Human Resource Development Program Scholarship, G-cube Fellowship,  GRIPS Fellowship, and the ICHARM Research Assistantship.

The scholarships ready when applying through a sponsoring organization are Japanese Government-YLP-MEXT Scholarship, Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Asia, Indonesian Government Scholarship for Linkage Master’s Program, JICA/Building Research Institute (BRI), JICA/Public Works Research Institute (PWRI) and Japan International Cooperation Agency.

GRIPS targets students who are mid-career public officials with strong leadership and managerial potential as well as individuals with strong academic skills who desire to be professional policy analysts or to pursue an academic career. Therefore, I urge you to read through carefully and apply.

What Are The Benefits of GRIPS Japanese Government Scholarships?

Over 90% of GRIPS students receive full scholarships. The scholarship covers a monthly stipend for living costs such as food, clothing, and other daily expenses, as well as accommodation, transportation, medical treatment, insurance and various miscellaneous expenses; application fee, admission fee, and tuition; and economy-class air tickets between the home country and Japan upon enrollment and upon completion of studies. Allowances and rules differ slightly for each scholarship.

Eligibility For GRIPS Scholarship

The particular scholarship will be determined by GRIPS based on eligibility requirements imposed by the scholarship providers.

GRIPS targets students who are mid-career public officials with strong leadership and managerial potential and individuals with strong academic capabilities who desire to be professional policy analysts or to pursue an academic career.

Candidates applying for Masters Programs and 5-year Ph.D. Programs must possess a Bachelors’s degree or its equivalent while candidates apply for a 3-year Ph.D. Programs must possess a Masters’s degree or its equivalent.

Host Nationality and Institution

The GRIPS 2021 Scholarship is hosted in Japan through the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS).

Eligible Countries

Students from developing countries are encouraged to apply.

Field of Study

Public Policy; Public Finance; Macroeconomic Policy; Economics, Planning and Public Policy; Disaster Management Policy; Maritime Safety and Security Policy; Japanese and Culture

How To Apply For GRIPS Scholarship

Application procedures differ by program. Some programs require that you apply directly to GRIPS whereas others require that you apply through a sponsoring organization. Please see below for how to apply to each program.

Master’s Programs

  • One-year Master‘s Program of Public Policy (MP1) 
  • Two-year Master’s Program of Public Policy (MP2)
  • Macroeconomic Policy Program (MEP) (One year Program or Two-year Program) for externally funded or self-financed applicants only
  • Public Finance Program (PF)

Ph.D. Programs

 Five-year Ph.D. Program (minimum of 3 years)

  • Policy Analysis Program (PA) 

 Three-year Ph.D. Programs

  • GRIPS Global Governance Program (G-cube)
  • Security and International Studies Program (SISP) 
  • Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy Program (STI) 

Step 1  Online Entry Form

Fill out and submit the Online Entry Form. The Admissions Office will send you an ID and a password by e-mail.

Step 2  Online Application Form

Use your ID and password to access the GRIPS portal, G-way. Complete and submit the Online Application Form.

Step 3  Supporting documents

Send the required supporting documents to the Admissions Office by post.

Deadline of Application for GRIPS Scholarship

For candidates who wish to be considered for a scholarship who are residing outside Japan, the application deadlines for those applying directly to GRIPS are;

  • 29 November – the 1-year Masters in Program of Public Policy (MP1); the 2-year Master’s Program of Public Policy (MP2);
  • 17 January – or the Ph.D. programs in Policy Analysis (PA), GRIPS Global Governance (G-cube), Security and International Studies Program (SISP), and Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Program (STI); and the Masters in Economics, Planning and Public Policy Program (EPP);
  • 28 February – for the Masters in Public Finance Program (PF); and
  • 6 March – or the Ph.D. in Disaster Management Program (DM).

Yes. If you are currently a student, you can submit the thesis you have been working on even if it is incomplete. If you think it is not enough, you can also submit a term paper or some other paper related to your research. If your program does not require a thesis, you can submit a paper that you wrote during your study and that is related to your area of research.
