I wouldn’t really want to be like a Jack of all trades who masters nothing. I would have loved to show you all the processes for different schools, but I will take my time and focus on one- Memorial University of Newfoundland Tuition Fees.

Memorial University of Newfoundland Undergraduate Tuition and Fees

If you are an undergraduate newbie at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, and you really don’t know your way around how to pay your fees or even how much it costs? Then I’ve got you.

Those are what I’m going to show you in the lines to follow.

To help you understand clearly what I want to show you, I’ll be answering some specific questions that may matter to you.

What Will My Tuition Fee Cost?

Interestingly, as you may want to know, the provincial government subsidizes the tuition fee of students at MUN, making their tuition fees one of the lowest tuition fees in the country.

This means it is more affordable for local, national, and international students to come to Memorial University.

However, how much you pay as tuition fees will depend so largely on the number of courses and classes you take.

Below are sample costs for two semesters of a bachelor’s degree program for the 2021 – 2022 academic year.

How Can I Pay My Fees?

If you are a Canadian citizen, you will need to follow the information below very closely as it applies particularly to you.

There are two payment channels available to you if you are a Canadian student. You could pay through online banking, and you could pay using cheques, bank drafts, cash or debit cards.

Payments using Online Banking

If you are a Canadian student and you want to pay through a Canadian financial institution, then you will need to read this part carefully.

Carefully follow the instructions from your financial institution’s online bill payment service for setting up a payee and sending payment.

Set up the payee as the Memorial University of Newfoundland Tuition account number is set as your student number (e.g., V00XXXXXX).

Please it is important to note that the payee name may vary slightly between financial institutions. Some may appear as Memorial University of Newfoundland Tuition Fees. Some may appear as Tuition Fees, while some others may just appear as Fees, etc.  

However, if you are unable to identify the payee’s actual name, please contact your bank directly for assistance. 

Payments should be processed within three business days.

Login to my.mun.ca and check your student account to ensure the payment has been applied. Payments made on or before the payment of the fees deadline are considered received by Memorial as of the bank transaction date and will NOT be charged a late fee.

Payments using a Credit Card 

MasterCard and Visa are accepted for the payment of tuition and related fees. MasterCard and Visa payments can only be made through Memorial Self-Service. Credit card payments cannot be made in person at the Cashier’s Office. To make your payment using your credit card, follow the steps below:

1. Login to my.mun.ca to launch Memorial Self-Service.
2. Click on the following links Student Main Menu > Financial Information > Credit Card Payment.
3. Follow the instructions to make a credit card payment.

Please note there will be a convenience fee of 1.95% charged to your card by Moneris. Payments made through Self-Service should be applied to your student account immediately. 

Payments using Bank cheques, drafts, money orders, cash, or debit cards

If you wish to pay through any of these channels, then you would need to read this part very carefully.

It is important to note that payments made through any of these channels are made in person and not by proxy.

If you wish to make your payment in cash or using your debit card, you will need to go make the payment in person at the Cashier’s Office located at room number A1023 in the Arts & Administration Building in St. John’s or at the Bursar’s Office in the Arts and Science Building in Corner Brook.

This has to be during regular business hours. The Cashier hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday.

If you are paying by cheque, it is important to ensure that your student number is on the front of the cheque.

You can simply drop off your cheque slip in the cheque slot located to the left of the cashier’s desk without really wasting your time.

Sadly, I may need to remind you, you may encounter long queues if you are paying late by cash or debit card close to the payment deadline.

It is also important to note that all debit cards have daily purchase limits; ensure that your limit is high enough to cover your tuition.

By mail:

Interestingly, contrary to what I thought, cheques can also be mailed or can be placed in the night deposit box outside the Cashier’s Office in St. John’s. Simply mail the document to:

While sending your mail, be careful to ensure that your student number is on the front of the cheque, money order or bank draft and that your payment is made out to “Memorial University”.

Note: It can take up to 10 business days for payment by mail to be received and processed. Ensure that sufficient time is allowed if you choose to send your payment by mail.

Also, note that a dishonored cheque fee of $25.00 will be charged for each cheque tendered to the University and not honored by the bank. A student with a dishonored cheque record must pay fees by cash, certified cheque, or money order

Payments using Tuition Voucher

Students receiving a tuition voucher must present the tuition voucher and pay the balance of their fees to the Cashier’s/Bursar’s Office by the published fee payment deadline to avoid being assessed a late payment fee.

Tuition vouchers can also be placed in the night deposit box outside the Cashier’s Office, room number A1023 in the Arts and Administration Building.

Students should ensure that tuition vouchers that are placed in the night deposit box have their student number written on the back of the voucher.

Payments through Student Aid

Students paying fees from a Canada Student Loan who are not on a disbursement schedule will have the amount owing signed out automatically from their loans.

Please note that e-Transfer^® (INTERAC e-Transfer) payments via email notification are not accepted by the University. To pay fees electronically, use your financial institution’s online bill payment services.

Western Union GlobalPay for Students (for international payments only)

International students who wish to attend Memorial University can use this channel to lodge their payments.

It might interest you to know that Memorial University has partnered with Western Union Business Solutions to provide international students with a fast and affordable way to make payments from outside of Canada using the WUBS bank transfer and online payment platform GlobalPay for Students.

The Western Union GlobalPay for Students service allows you to arrange payments in your own currency without having to worry about currency fluctuations or international wire fees.

How to pay for Memorial University of Newfoundland Tuition Fees

To make a payment using Western Union GlobalPay for International Students, kindly follow the steps given below:

1. Log on to the Western Union GlobalPay for Students system using your MUN student number and preferred contact email address. 
2. For ’1-Tuition Fees,’ enter the amount owing on your tuition account summary.
3. Select your local currency. The amount owing in your local currency will be automatically calculated.
4. Select who is making the payment from the ‘Who is Paying’ drop-down list and complete the required payment details fields. If the payer is different from the student, you can enter the payer details here. 
5. Confirm your quote by agreeing to the total cost in your home currency and agree to the conditions.
6. Payment instructions will be sent to the email address provided. Print the payment instructions, take them to your bank and follow the instructions to transfer the required amount to Western Union Business Solutions. 
7. Note:  the payment must be completed within 72 hours. If the 72-hour period has elapsed and you have not made the payment at your bank, go back to the Western Union GlobalPay for Students site to obtain a new quote. The expiry date is noted on the payment instructions page.

For students paying from India and Korea:

If you are an international student coming from either India or Korea, simply follow the steps above. Your payment instructions will direct you to make your payment through a specific bank in your home country.

Once funds have been transferred to Western Union, they will be credited to your Memorial University account in Canadian dollars.

No fees will be charged by Memorial University or Western Union Business Solutions when using this service, though your bank may charge a fee to make the local currency transfer. 

Payments using Wire Transfer

At MUN, the preferred method for international wire transfers is WUBS GlobalPay for Students, as it allows them to process a high volume of international payments in a timely manner.

If necessary, you can send an international wire transfer payment directly to Memorial University from your local bank.

Just follow these three steps:

1. Send an email to the Cashier’s Office to request Memorial’s banking information.
2. Include the student name and student number in the details of the wire transfer.
3. Follow your bank’s instructions to send a wire transfer to Memorial.

Payments should be received within ten business days. Login to my.mun.ca and check your student account to ensure the payment has been applied.

Graduate Tuition at Memorial University

Graduate tuition at Memorial University is among the lowest in Canada. Total program fees for most of the graduate programs are outlined below.

Program Fees per Semester 

Graduate tuition fees at Memorial University are charged on a semester-by-semester basis and reflect the cost of the graduate program, not the number of required courses.

Memorial has three semesters per academic year: Fall (September – December), Winter (January – April), and Spring (May-August).

Program fees are to be paid each semester as per the payment plans outlined below.

Graduate Diploma and doctoral program fees (except for the Ph.D. in Management) are fixed. Master’s students may have a choice among three payment plans:

• Plan A is normally recommended for full-time students (i.e., students who anticipate completing in 6 semesters or less).
• Plan B is normally recommended for part-time students (i.e., students who will require more than six semesters to complete).
• Full-time students in certain 1-year master’s programs may be eligible for Payment Plan C. 

Please note that some graduate programs have special fees that are charged in addition to the regular program fees outlined above. Please refer to the Minimum Expense form for details.

Other fees 

Graduate students are also responsible for ancillary fees (including but not exclusive to student union fees, recreation fees, student services fees, campus renewal fees, health insurance, and dental insurance) listed in the Minimum Expense form.

For distance education courses, there are administrative fees that are charged in addition to the tuition fees for these courses. Please visit the Online Learning website for more details. 

Please note that graduate students who do not complete their programs in the number of semesters listed above will be required to pay a continuance fee for each additional semester required.

If you finish your graduate program in fewer semesters than the payment plan, you must pay the remaining program fee in a lump sum. Please refer to the Minimum Expense form for more information.

Cost of living

Newfoundland and Labrador offer graduate students a high quality of life due to its relatively low cost of living compared to other parts of Canada.

A single full-time Newfoundland master’s student can expect to pay approximately $17,378.63 a year for university fees, books, accommodations, and meals.

A single full-time other Canadian master’s student can expect to pay approximately $18,236.63 a year.

A single full-time international master’s student can expect to pay approximately $19,352.63 a year.

For graduate diploma and PhD students, simply replace graduate tuition with the appropriate per-semester program fee based on your immigration status multiplied by 3 (3 semesters in an academic year).

The estimates below are in Canadian dollars and give you a sense of how much it may cost to study and live at Memorial. All figures are approximate. The exact figures can vary significantly depending on your lifestyle and needs. Due to relocation costs, your first few semesters as a graduate student may be more expensive than normal.

However, DO NOT SEND more than the tuition you are charged.  Any overpayments will be credited to future tuition and will not be refunded to the student.
