Try a pre-M.B.A., pre-Law, or pre-Medicine program, as well as any other foundation or preparation courses that will allow you to study in the degree program of your choice.

Improve your English through an English-language prep course: If you’re attending a degree programme in Austria, you will sometimes need to prove that your language skills are good enough to participate in the classes and understand the lectures. The best way to submit a complete application is to contact the institution of your choice before you submit your application. The staff will inform you about all formal and academic requirements. Some institutions offer a “registration of data” via the Internet and will then send specific information to you via e-mail.

Requirements for the admission to Austrian universities

The following requirements must be fulfilled for the matriculation of a foreign citizen (or a stateless person) as a regular student in Austrian university degree programs:

  • A place to study has to be available at the university for the desired course of study.
  • The applicant must have an A-level or high school diploma, that can be considered equivalent to an Austrian Matura examination certification (either regulated by an agreement or in individual cases decided by the vice-chancellor, possibly with certain requirements) or furnish proof of completion of a three-year (minimum) study at another certified post-secondary educational institution.
  • The certification must be sufficient for acceptance to the desired course of study at a university in the country in which it was acquired. Any study-related requirements (e.g. entrance examination) must be fulfilled in the country in which the A-level or high school diploma was issued.

Checking  the closing dates

Once you have decided which study programs interest you should check how and when to submit your application to those programs. In general, students in a bachelor or diploma program have to register by September 5th (for the winter semester) or February 5th (for the summer semester).

Funding your studies

From the beginning, you will have to consider how you will finance your studies in Austria. Even when the tuition fee itself is low you still will need to be able to independently cover your everyday living expenses in Austria – so you will need to plan your finances carefully!

Please note that there are hardly any scholarships for obtaining a whole degree program (bachelor, master, or Ph.D.) here in Austria. But below here are some scholarships available to you to pursue your study in Austria.

Austria Study Visa application

The kind of entry documents you need depends on your nationality. When applying for a visa or residence permit you usually need to visit the local Austrian embassy in person.   If your home country does not have an Austrian embassy, you usually need to travel to an Austrian embassy in some neighboring country.

Therefore it is very important that you check the visa/student residence permit application procedures well in advance!   Nationals of EU and EEA member countries, as well as Swiss nationals, do not need visas or residence permits for Austria.

When staying in Austria for longer than 3 months, however, you have to inform the competent residence authority in Austria in person within four months and apply for a confirmation of registration, which serves as the confirmation of registration at the immigration office (Landeshaupmann, Magistrate, Bezirkshauptmannschaft) within 3 months of entry to Austria.
