The POISE General Scholarships

To be eligible for POISE General Scholarships, the recipient must reside in Allegheny County and be accepted or currently attend a two-year or four-year university, post-secondary technical or trade school.

Limited funding is available for graduate studies. Preference is given to African-American students.

Applicants may attend schools throughout the United States. Scholarship amounts vary typically among $500 to $1,500 per scholarship.

POISE provides approximately 6 general scholarships per cycle.

The Peggy L. Payne Memorial Scholarship

The Delta Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is pleased to announce its scholarship program for the 2022 school year. 

In recent years, the local chapter has awarded numerous scholarships to very deserving students. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the oldest Black Greek-letter organization established in America by African American college women. The mission is to provide service to all mankind by volunteering our time and resources to multifaceted programs that address education, health, and wellness, as well as issues of national and international concern.

Applications for scholarships are now being accepted from qualified students who:
  • Are graduating high school seniors entering a four-year college or university OR are community college students transferring to a four-year college or university
  • Have a minimum GPA (Grade Point Average) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Are interested in careers in education (for the Dr. Peggy L. Payne Memorial Scholarship only).

The Aspiring Literary Scholar Award

Each year, the GOG Scholarship Committee grants at least two writing awards to young writers especially African-American women.

One award is given to an Unpublished Writer and the other award is given to an Aspiring Writer who attends a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

Candidate must be a full-time freshman, sophomore or junior student attending a historically Black college or university (HBCU).

The 1st place award winner in each category will receive $1,000.

Amos & Edith Wallace Scholarship

The “Amos and Edith Wallace” Scholarship was founded to reward young, bright African-American students who have demonstrated exemplary leadership, commitment to service and education.

The scholarship which ranks among the top scholarship for African-American women is in honor of the late Rev. Amos Wallace Sr. and his wife of 53 years, Mrs. Edith Wallace.

Both Rev. and Mrs. Wallace shared a strong devotion to people, community, and education.

The scholarship is open to the 2022 class of KHS graduating seniors (African-American Students) who have a minimum 2.8 GPA.

APA’s Scholarships

The APA scholarship is awarded annually to African-American women who are intending to pursue careers as practicing planners in the public sector and are able to demonstrate a genuine financial need.

The program is open to undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in an approved Planning Accreditation Board (PAB) planning program.

Students must be citizens of the United States. Awards will range between $2,000 and $5,000.

The Department of Defense (DoD) Scholarship

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund in partnership with the DOD is pleased to offer full scholarships to qualified high school graduating seniors who have a minimum cumulative 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

The scholarship is a full 4-year renewable scholarship capped at $15,000 per year (for a total not to exceed $60,000).

The Minority Journalism Scholarship

The Wells Fargo Scholarship

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and Wells Fargo are proud to offer financial assistance to outstanding students attending one of the 47 publicly-supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) within the TMCF member-schools network.
