Established in 2004, the University of Manchester is a public research university in Manchester, England, formed by the merger of the University Of Manchester Institute Of Science and Technology and the Victoria University of Manchester.

The University of Manchester is a red-brick university, a product of the civic university movement of the late 19th century.

The University of Manchester traces its historical roots to the formation of the Mechanics’ Institute (later UMIST) in 1824, and its heritage is linked to Manchester’s pride in being the world’s first industrial city. The University of Manchester fees

Generally speaking, the tuition fees in most British universities, especially the top-ranking institutions, are expensive, with some of them relatively cheaper. The University of Manchester tuition fee varies depending on the course and program applied for, whether you are from the UK or a citizen of another country.

You may need to visit the school website to get more detailed information on the fees and their breakdown. However, the tuition fee, on average, ranges between 9,250 GBP for local students and 21,000 GBP for international students.

The annual list price to attend Manchester University on a full-time basis for 2018 is $44,248 for all students, regardless of their residency. This fee is comprised of $30,450 for tuition, $10,100 for room and board, $1,000 for books and supplies, and $1,210 for other fees.

University of Manchester campus

The main campus is south of Manchester city center on Oxford Road. In 2016/17, the university had 40,490 students and 10,400 staff, making it the second-largest university in the UK (out of 167, including the Open University), and the largest single-site university.

It has the third-largest endowment of any university in England, after the universities of Cambridge and Oxford. It is a member of the worldwide Universities Research Association, the Russell Group of British research universities, and the N8 Group.

The university’s main site contains most of its facilities and is often referred to as campus. However, Manchester is not a campus university as the concept is commonly understood. It is centrally located in the city, and its buildings are integrated into the fabric of Manchester, with non-university buildings and major roads between.

The campus occupies an area shaped roughly like a boot: the foot of which is aligned roughly south-west to north-east and is joined to the broader southern part of the boot by an area of overlap between former UMIST and former VUM buildings; it comprises two parts:

  • North campus or Sackville Street Campus, centered on Sackville Street
  • South campus or Oxford Road Campus, centered on Oxford Road

The names are not officially recognized by the university but are commonly used, including in parts of its website, and roughly correspond to the campuses of the old UMIST and Victoria University, respectively.

Fallowfield Campus is the main residential campus in Fallowfield, approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) south of the main site.

There are other university buildings across the city and the wider region, such as Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire and One Central Park in Moston, a collaboration between the university and other partners that offers office space for start-up firms and venues for conferences and workshops,

University of Manchester accommodation

Separate halls are available for undergraduates and postgraduates, but the University also has halls comprising a mix of both. In these, graduate students are typically roomed together.

Catered Halls

In catered halls, meals are provided for 33 weeks, and their cost is included in the residence fee, which makes budgeting easier. Varied and extensive menus are offered, vegetarian options are always available, and provisions can be made for those with special dietary requirements.

Students will be provided with an excellent choice of healthy meals twice a day for 5 days a week (Fallowfield) or 7 days a week (Victoria Park). More information on mealtimes and menus can be found here.

Self-catered Halls

Self-catered halls offer flexibility and independence: you determine the food budget, prepare the meals and decide when and what to eat. Typically, those in self-catered halls are grouped in shared flats or corridors. Communal lounges and kitchens are provided, in each of which you will find cupboard space, cookers, microwaves, refrigerators, and freezers. Students are required to bring their own cutlery and crockery.

Another catering option

If you choose self-catered accommodation but would like to have meals prepared for you occasionally FoodonCampus outlets around the University are available as an alternative source of nourishment throughout the day. For more information, see the FoodonCampus website.

Accommodation facilities

Study Bedrooms

Study bedrooms are single occupancy and comprise a bed, desk, chair, wardrobe, and shelving; all have internet access. You may bring your own television, but you are required to obtain your own television license.

Standard Facilities

Standard rooms comprise standard fixtures and fittings (bed, desk, chair, etc.), with other facilities (shower, wash-basins, toilet, etc.) shared with fellow residents. The ratio of facilities to residents is approximately 1:4, dependent on the hall. This is the same for standard rooms with a wash-hand basin. However, the fees for a standard room are less than those for standard wash-hand basin rooms. For more hall-specific information, please visit the relevant hall webpage here. (Tramadol)

Ensuite Facilities

In addition to the standard fixtures and fittings (bed, desk, chair, etc.), ensuite study bedrooms include an adjoining pod comprising a shower cubicle, wash-hand basin, and toilet. Fees for ensuite facilities are higher than those for standard and standard wash-hand basin rooms.

Gender mix

All of the University’s residences are mixed-sex but for one all-female hall, St Gabriel’s Hall. Ashburne Hall has separate female undergraduate areas and also mixed-sex areas for both undergraduates and postgraduates. Additionally, some mixed-sex halls offer single-sex flats or corridors.

Family accommodation

The University has a limited supply of accommodation specifically for students with families and partners. As demand exceeds supply, this type of accommodation cannot be guaranteed. Through Manchester Student Homes, many families and students with partners also find flats or houses in the privately rented sector.

To avoid possible inconvenience, you are strongly advised to come to Manchester without your partner and/or family initially and send for them later once you have found suitable accommodation. You should also be aware that finding family accommodation for any period of less than a full year is extremely difficult.

The University’s Family and Partner accommodations are at Horniman House. This residence is normally let for a 52-week period (from September to September).
