Brief History of William Paterson University

William Paterson was founded in 1855 and is the second oldest of the nine state colleges and universities in New Jersey. William Paterson offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees through its five academic colleges. In the fall semester 2017, 8,838 students and 1,414 students were enrolled.

For over a century his sole responsibility was to train teachers for schools in New Jersey. In 1951 the university moved to its current campus. Originally known as Ailsa Farms, the property was purchased from the state of New Jersey in 1948 by the family of Garret Hobart, the twenty-fourth vice president of the United States.

William Paterson University was given its current name in 1971 in honor of the state’s first Senator, William Paterson, who was appointed to the Supreme Court by President George Washington.

Today the university hosts approximately 10,000 students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It’s also one of the most diverse universities in New Jersey, and an impressive 30 percent of its students are the first in their families to attend university.

What are the Admission requirements for William Paterson University

To be enrolled as a freshman, you must have the equivalent of a U.S. high school diploma and have never attended college or university.

Admission for international students is based on a review of the relevant educational documents and English proficiency, as measured by the English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test or the International English Testing System (IELTS).

The TOEFL minimum score (test of English as a foreign language) is 79-80 for the web-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, and 550 for the paper-based test.

The minimum score for IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is 6.0. Upon admission, all new students are required to take the university’s reading, writing and maths placement test.

University Trustee Scholarships

These scholarships recognize high-achieving students. They are automatically awarded to freshmen based on academic performance in high school, including GPA and standardized test scores (SAT or ACT). The student receives $4,000 to $9,000 per year. $16,000 to $36,000 over four years.

University Honors College Scholarships

First-year students with exceptional high school results may be considered for University Honors College scholarships of $4,000 per year, which can be extended for up to four years. The priority deadline is March 1st.

Alice Waldron Endowed Scholarship

The Alice Waldron Fellowship was sponsored by former William Paterson University President Dr. Kathleen Waldron, created for a full-time student who demonstrates:

The Alice Waldron Scholarship can be extended for up to four years (eight consecutive semesters) if the student has full-time status (at least 12 credit hours) and a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.30.

Arab American Scholarship

The Arab American Scholarship provides assistance to students with financial needs who seek to become leaders in their disciplines and contribute to their community.

The scholarships are open to full-time beginners, transfer students, and enrolled students. Citizenship is not a requirement; Students with international or refugee status are eligible.

The factors considered for selection include the following:

  • Arab-American ancestry and / or interest in Arab-American studies and communities;
  • proven financial need;
