The vision of The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program is to educate and develop academically qualified yet economically disadvantaged young people in Africa who will contribute to the transformation of the continent.

This $500 million program will provide students in secondary school and university with the knowledge and leadership skills needed to contribute to economic and social progress across Africa.

The Foundation was established in 2006 and seeks to provide greater access to education, skills training, and financial services for people living in poverty, primarily in Africa. The MasterCard Foundation believes that all people, no matter their starting point in life, should have an equal chance to learn and prosper.

The MasterCard foundation scholars program is taken in the UK at The University of Edinburgh.

Eligible Nationality

The scholarship is for the brightest and best African scholars (Ethiopians inclusive) with great potential but few educational opportunities.

Scholarship Worth

The MasterCard foundation scholars program will provide full scholarships, including

  • accommodation costs,
  • living costs,
  • travel and
  • tuition fees to students taking courses on campus at Edinburgh.

More so; 60 Scholars from other MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program institutions will also benefit from participating in a number of online distance learning Masters programmes offered by the University of Edinburgh. As well as receiving an excellent education at one of the top-ranked universities in the world.

Number of Scholarships:

The University of Edinburgh will provide 80 undergraduate and 120 postgraduate African students with full scholarships over the next seven years.

Who Is Eligible MasterCard Foundation Scholarships 

Undergraduate Scholarships:

80 undergraduate scholarships are available over the next four years for the brightest and best African scholars with great potential, but few educational opportunities.

  • You must qualify academically for admission to the University of Edinburgh. We prefer that applicants apply to this scholarship BEFORE applying to the University. Have a look at entry requirements for undergraduate students at http://www.ed.ac.uk/studying/international/country/africa. Please see the section on applying below for more information;
  • You must be a resident and citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country, whose personal circumstances would make accepting an offer from the University of Edinburgh difficult.  Applications from Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe are particularly welcome;
  • You must demonstrate a track record of leadership and service within your community; and
  • You are able to present economically disadvantaged circumstances and be able to show that you lack financial means from family or other sources to pursue post-secondary (university) education in your home country or elsewhere.

The scholarship is not available to students already on a programme.

The scholarship may be terminated at any time when an unsatisfactory progress report is received from the School or if the scholarship holder ceases to be registered as a full-time student at the University of Edinburgh.

MasterCard Foundation  Postgraduate Scholarships

60 postgraduate Masters scholarships are available for the brightest and best African scholars with great potential but few educational opportunities.

  • You must qualify academically for admission to the University of Edinburgh in the programs listed above. We encourage applicants to apply to this scholarship BEFORE applying to the University. Have a look at entry requirements for postgraduate students at http://www.ed.ac.uk/studying/international/postgraduate-entry/africa Please see the section on applying below for more information;
  • You must be a resident and citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country, whose personal circumstances would make accepting an offer from the University of Edinburgh difficult.  Applications from Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe are particularly welcome;
  • You must demonstrate a track record of leadership and service within your community; and
  • You are able to present economically disadvantaged circumstances and be able to show that you lack financial means from family or other sources to pursue post-secondary (university) education in your home country or elsewhere.

Preference will be given to candidates who have not already had the opportunity to study in Scotland.

How To Apply For MasterCard Foundation Scholarships :

We are no longer accepting applications for the 2022 MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program.

If you have recently submitted the pre-application assessment, you will receive an email shortly with further directions.

Applications for 2022 entry to the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Edinburgh will open on 01 October.

The closing date for applications is 2:00pm GMT 30 October.

The scholarships are competitive and awarded broadly on the basis of academic merit. Candidates must have, or expect to obtain, the overseas equivalent of a UK first-class honors degree. Applicants’ financial, personal, and family circumstances will also be taken into account.

Applicants must also be committed to returning to Africa following their graduation to give back to their home community and country
