According to Supt. Brima Kamara, the objective of the recruitment is to replace the retirees and would-be retires whose days are numbered in the SLP, noting that applicants for recruitment into the Force should be legible for short-listing and must have three credits in the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE), including the two core subjects – Mathematics and English or four credits in NCTVA.

Applicants, he said, must be between the ages of 18-35 and must be physically fit, mentally sound, and medically fit, and must be ready and prepared for 2 to 10 weeks of police training.

“Allowances will be provided at the training school for trainees,” assured Supt. Kamara. He, however, emphasized that successful applicants must pass the professional police entrance examination followed by an interview.

Pregnant women, Supt. Kamara said, are encouraged not to apply because they would be booted out even during the course of training when their pregnancy is discovered, adding that application forms can only be accessible at the police website www.police.gov.sl for which he urged all interested applicants to visit the site and obtain their forms.

Meanwhile, the public has vehemently condemned a section of the application form requiring the tribe of the applicant which many people believe promotes ethnicity.

This Medium was also intimated by the well-composed Media One that the Sierra Leone Police, pays based on the qualifications attained by police officers, adding that the requirement needed of specialists is just to attempt the WASSCE.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Richard Moigbe, said the process started in 2014 but was stopped because of the Ebola virus noting that the second set of the 2,383 recruits was presently undergoing on-the-job training.

The IGP disclosed that 28% of the 1,008 recruits were university graduates who took the Sierra Leone Police Exam to join the Sierra Leone police Department. There were also specialist recruits in the batch: 5 medical doctors, 2 lawyers, and 2 engineers. These were decorated with the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
