South African Association For Food Science and Technology Foundation Bursaries

The Southern African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation is offering bursaries to Matric and Undergraduate students in Food Science and Technology to provide financial aid for the students.

Bursaries are given primarily based on 3 big facets — instructional merit demonstrated potential and job fairness.

About the Organization — SAAFOST

The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation is the association of food science, technology, and other professionals serving South Africa’s food and allied industries.

SAAFoST targets at increasing the information base of food technology and science by supporting scientific research, a membership magazine book, seminars, workshops, exhibitions, meetings, and assisting in educational pursuits.

The business is non-profit and chiefly run by volunteers, together with approximately 2000 members around Southern Africa.

SAAFoST has created the SAAFoST Foundation, which will be responsible for the administration of SAAFoST academic bursaries, awards, and prizes.

Scholarship Benefits

The SAAFoST Foundation Bursaries will offer a benefit that covers the tuition fees to a quantity of R35 000 each year.

Eligibility for Scholarship

Applicants should meet the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please notice that failure to meet each of the prerequisites will probably result in an application not being considered):

Matric students:

  • must be a South African citizen
  • Have been a resident within South Africa for a minimum of 3 years before applying
  • have completed Further Education & Training Certificate (FETC) (General) qualification OR the equivalent
  • have achieved a minimum of level 5 (60-69%) for Physical Science and Mathematics (as well as Life Science, but not mandatory)
  • have enrolled to study full time towards a first undergraduate Degree or Diploma within the Food Science and Technology field
  • have enrolled to study at a recognized tertiary institution in South Africa
  • Preference will be given to Matric students with strong academic results or potential

Undergraduate students:

  • must be a South African citizen or South African permanent resident
  • Have been a resident within South Africa for a minimum of 3 years before applying
  • Have been a SAAFoST member for a minimum of 12 months before applying
  • Enrolled to study full time towards a first undergraduate Degree or Diploma within the Food Science and Technology field
  • Enrolled to study at a recognized tertiary institution in South Africa
  • Be able to finish your qualification within the specified amount of time (i.e. – Undergraduate Degree (up to B.Sc (Hons) = a maximum of 3 years/Diploma = a maximum of 3 years / B. Tech Degree = a maximum of 4 years)
  • Preference will be given to students with strong academic results or potential

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):

Matric students:

  • ID document or passport (certified copy of)
  • Passport-sized photo (head & shoulders)
  • Grade 11 final results (certified copy of)
  • Matric’s latest results (certified copy of)
  • Personal Statement (details on the application form)
  • Reference Letter (details on the application form)
  • National Benchmarking Test or Potential Test results from your selected tertiary institute

Undergraduate students:

  • ID document or passport (certified copy of)
  • Passport-sized photo (head & shoulders)
  • Latest tertiary academic results (details on the application form)
  • Personal Statement (explaining how your education within the food science and technology sector will have a positive effect on the scientific community – maximum 1 page)
  • Reference Letter (written by a person who has known you within your learning capacity for the past 3 years)
  • Proof of registration for 2022 at your tertiary institute
