The UNICEF Internship Program offers qualified students the chance to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF’s work. UNICEF is active in various functional areas linked to its mandate, which can be categorized into three main pillars: Program and Policy, External Relations, and Operations.

UNICEF Overview

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is the leading intergovernmental organization for child protection and support.

It operates in 190 countries and has over 13,000 staff members of different nationalities. For the past 70 years, the agency has sought to protect the rights of children with the support of governments, NGOs, and private organizations.

UNICEF helps supply vaccines for developing countries, supports projects linked to quality basic education for children, and promotes actions to protect children and young people at risk in different parts of the world.

What is the UNICEF internship program?

The UNICEF Internship Programme offers eligible students the opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF’s work. The duration of the UN internship the duration is usually between six (6) and twenty-six (26) weeks.


Internships are offered depending on the needs and capacity of offices to receive and supervise interns. The United Nations Internships are advertised all year round on the employment page. 

UNICEF is active in various functional areas related to its mandate, which can be categorized into three main pillars: Programme and Policy, External Relations and Operations. A UNICEF internship is a very positive experience to have on your resume/CV and is looked at positively when the Intern applies to UNICEF posts later in their careers.

What is the goal of UNICEF?

The goal of the UNICEF internship program is to give practical experience in the field of international development with a focus on protecting the basic rights of children, under the direct supervision of a senior staff member of the organization.

The organization’s diversified environment enables cultural and experience exchange with professionals of various nationalities and different educational and professional backgrounds.

Therefore, an internship in this organization will be a valuable asset to your curriculum and a great unique feature in future selection processes, since you will have the opportunity to know and experience the work dynamics, internal policies, and routine of the organization.

What is the UNICEF Internship Cost?

The agency gives no financial aid to cover costs related to preparing for or doing the internship. However, you may request financial support from a sponsoring institution, for example, a university and/or government agency in your country.

Visa:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs and arrangements of getting the visa (if needed to do the internship).

Insurance:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs of enrolling in a valid global medical insurance plan and must submit the following documents:

  • A confirmed and signed copy of a Medical Certificate of Good Health;
  • Proof of Health Insurance valid for the agency’s region;
  • Proof of Life/Accident Insurance valid for the agency’s region

Accommodation:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for accommodation expenses during the internship period.

Other:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs and arrangements of the trip to the workplace to which you have been assigned.

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for an internship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or Ph.D. degree program or have graduated within the past two years.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Be an expert in at least one of UNICEF’s working languages: English, French or Spanish. Fluency in the working language of the office you are applying to is required.
  • Have exceptional academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
  • Have no immediate relations (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office; and
  • Have no other relatives in the line of authority to which you will report to.

Individuals must demonstrate outstanding academic performance through recent university or institution records.

Additional attention will be given to any past professional experience.

Are internships at UNICEF paid?

Internships at UNICEF can be unpaid or paid, subject to funds availability. Regardless of the internship payment modality, all successful applicants are expected to make their own arrangements for travel, lodging, and living expenses during the internship period.

Is UNICEF an NGO?

UNICEF is part of the United Nations (UN) and UN members are governments. So UNICEF is not an NGO. Just like Red Cross, because their members are governments, they are not an NGO.

How long do the UNICEF internships last?

Keep in mind: Duration: The internship program lasts for at least two months and can be as long as six months. Once selected, you must begin your internship either prior to or within one year of graduation.
