On September 6, 1937, Worley was born in Lowell, Indiana, to Rose Irene (née Gardner) and Joseph Lauraine Worley. Her parents divorced in 1962, and her father remarried, having four children with his second wife, Nancy. Worley, who has long been known for her powerful voice, once said that as a child, she never sang hymns at church, preferring to lip-sync them instead for fear of drowning out everyone else.
Before she graduated from high school, she was appointed school comedienne. After graduating from high school in 1955, Worley moved to Blauvelt, New York, to begin her professional career as a member of the Pickwick Players. This resulted in a theatre scholarship to Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.
After two years at Midwestern, Worley moved to Los Angeles to study at Los Angeles City College and the Pasadena Playhouse. Not long after, she landed her first musical role in a production of Wonderful Town. Worley’s big break came in 1961 when she featured in the musical revue Billy Barnes People in Los Angeles; the piece subsequently went to Broadway, where it lasted only six performances. When Merv Griffin discovered Worley in 1966, she launched her own nightclub act in Greenwich Village the following year.

Career
Joanne Worley relocated to Los Angeles, California, and began working in musicals. She debuted on Broadway in 1964 in Hello, Dolly, and later developed her own nightclub act. Worley was discovered by Merv Griffin in 1966 and has been on The Merv Griffin Show approximately 40 times.
From 1960 to 1961, she starred in the TV series The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. From 1968 through 1970, Worley was a regular on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In. She starred in the television series Love, American Style from 1970 to 1973.
Worley was also a voice actress, appearing in the films Belle’s Magical World, A Goofy Movie, Beauty and the Beast, and Nutcracker Fantasy. She has guest-starred on Adam-12, Six Million Dollar Man, Murder, She Wrote, Mad About You, Caroline in the City, Boy Meets World, Sabrina, The Teenage Witch, Wizards of Waverly Place, Bones, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and The Middle.
